Quite an eye-opening discussion. Why are all these forums so male-dominated ? Where are all the witty rebuffs from all the feisty western (and Taiwanese for that matter) women out there - or are there none ?
I have already resigned myself to the fact that I will be invisible (even freakish) when I come to Taiwan in August. Although I can turn heads with the best of them back here. I just hope my British boyfriend, who claims to enjoy our shared political and philosophical views and often daft late night discussions, as well as my large (still upright breasts), does not share many of your views.
I can’t blame many of you for prefering local women though, if I was an average bloke who found a country where he was considered a catch by a race of non-argumentative and pretty women, I wouldn’t be able to believe my luck ! Particuarly if I’d been overlooked by women back home.

Yep, I had a hard time with that one too. Look up the word “li(4) hai (4)” in the dictionary and you’ll see a photo of a 30ish Taiwanese woman.
I have no problem with feminist points of view, as long as they don’t contain an outrageous number of unsupported assumptions. BritishVick’s post is fine.
I for one welcome any ball-busting, especially of the variety that I deserve, that comes my way. Keeps things interesting.

That misconception came straight out of the mouth of my Chinese-born Mandarin teacher, she said to my boyfriend “many Chinese and Taiwanese girls think it is fashionable to have a western boyfriend, they will also assume that you are rich. They will giggle and not argue, and will say yes to everything”.
I DO hope this is a misconception, I would like to make friends with some Taiwanese women and don’t think I’d have much in common with this kind of person.

Well, I hope your teacher is better at teaching than she is at social observation. How can I put this politely? She’s talking out of her arsehole.
I have no idea what the sitauation is in China, but in rural Taiwan, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a local girl who’ll go out with a dirty furriner. Its different in the cities, but believe me, the girls there know the score.
They think we’re rich? Oh come on! Why would they think that when they know perfectly well that we’re losers that couldn’t make it in our own countries?
Tell you teacher to get her head out of her behind and dry up if she doesn’t know what she’s talking about.
