Optical SPDIF cable

Mine just broke. I am looking for an optical SPDIF cable about 3-4 meters long, does anybody have an idea where to get one? I am not looking for an high-end, extremely pricy solution, just a cable that gets the job done.

I got mine from one of those little shops with TV and videos piled up. 3C should have them too for twice the price. No idea how you ask for it, show them your old one maybe.

You might post this in the Tech forum. If you’re walking to the GuangHua computer market from ZhongXiao XinSheng MRT stop, about 40 meters before you get to the main building, there’s a small street and walkway that let you cut off to the left under the onramp. If you keep walking straight you go into a side street that is full of computer parts stores. A couple stores down on your left is a store that’s all components. Check there, maybe upstairs. Thanks guys, I thought I might find something at guanghua but needed a pointer for the correct store. I will have to check it out tomorrow. It is driving me nuts, Stereo sounds gets through just fine, but once it switches to 5.1 it is all rubbish, digital rubbish, really pleasant for ears and speakers, and I am sure the DAC does not like it either.

I don’t think the cable would do that. Have you tried using the electrical cable connection ? You can use an audio/video cable which uses the same shaped plug (it tells you not to in the manual, but it didn’t blow up when I used it). If if plays stereo but not 5.1 (is that dolby or DTS ?) it sounds like something else is buggered up. A stereo CD uses more bandwidth than dolby surround, I think.

Hmm, you know, I wanted to try that, but that damn XBox only has an optical output. I don’t have any other player that has optical output either. So I am pretty much out of options. I just got the XBox, and everything was working fine last weekend. But then it started acting up on Monday. The optical In is on my sound card, and it does not work running Linux or Windows, with the execption that Windows turns the sound completely off, once the XBox switches to 5.1.

I got the idea with the cable because when I moved to Taiwan I rolled it up too tight, and now it has a couple of bends. It might be true that Stereo sound uses the same or higher bandwidth, but I guess 5.1 is probably somehow encoded or compressed, so there might be less room for error compensation. But again, I am just guessing. Also I noticed that when I plug in the optical cable, I have more noise coming from the speakers, but I have to double-check on this. I wish I could test the cable somewhere.
