The argument is over a case where a drunk driver who turned out to be an illegal immigrant killed a young girl. O’Reilly of course uses this to “demonstrate” the danger of having illegal immigrants in this country, and Geraldo calls him on it.
Thought O’Reilly was going to have a heart-attack for a minute there. I totally agree with Geraldo that O’Reilly is just using this tragedy to make a cheap political point and the incident has nothing whatsover to do with immigration policy.
Hard to see how the two issues are related. For example, if the guy had an outstanding warrant against him and had not yet been caught, then by O’Reilly’s logic the police should be culpable for failing to catch him in time before he committed this DUI offence. And anybody else who but for their negligence failed to stop him from being at that place at that time and causing that accident is also culpable. Arrest society! And so on.
Failure to arrest illegal immigrants does not cause death by drunken driving. It’s a good old fashioned logical fallacy to say it does.
Has he done the “takin’ out jobs, rapin’ our wimmin” speech yet?
O’Reilly is a buttmunch not a journalist or a talkshow host. He should be taken off the air - the sexist, xenophobic asswipe. Can you tell I really disdain the guy?
Bill O’Reilly is exactly the face of the Republican Party in its sad state today. We’ve already seen the governor down in Texas hold an inaugural rally presided over by Ted Nugent in a Confederate outfit spitting hate with every breath at Latinos, and now we see O’Reilly go into barking-dog mode – “WOOFWOOFWOOFWOOF” being about the sum of his effort – in making what Rivera (not exactly a brainiac but right this time) accurately calls a “cheap political point.”
I’m reading a book about Lincoln (“Party of Rivals”, quite good by the way) that gives a lot of the background on the creation of the Republican Party in the mid-1850s as part of the background information necessary to how Lincoln pulled together a strong cabinet from out of his old political rivals. Although there was some effort by the early Republicans to get the votes of the Know-Nothing Party members (the party had a strong anti-immigrant stance), Lincoln himself went to extraordinary efforts to address the needs of the main immigrant groups of the time and relied heavily on Schurz and Koerner to get Indiana and Pennsylvania on his side. Lincoln had even invested in a German-language newspaper and took numerous private steps during his presidential campaign to tone down the rhetoric from the anti-immigrant groups who existed under new Republican Party coalition.
I can’t imagine what O’Reilly or the official GOP does as part of their current propaganda as consistent with the party founders.
Yeah and there are no Democrats whatsoever failing to live up to the principles of their founding members. Go to the Global Warming thread. I posted an article that I think that you will find most amusing…
Do you know something. I finally realized something. I was just reading the newspaper the other day… and it dawned on me… that I have been such a Johnny come lately to the total picture of the Bush administration. You have been so right about so many things. I just wanted to write a letter of appreciation to you for pointing all that out to me. I am a bit embarrassed about it though, but then you probably know the Chinese expression “Nei hu bu kai ti nei hu?” It means let sleeping dogs lie or at least that is the closest English-language equivalent in my view…

“Johnny come lately” is hardly the right term. It will be interesting to see George Bush’s reaction when he finally realizes that he’s being hung out to dry by the real pimps of the whore in Iraq.
Actually, I find it a bit odd that the parties have changed places so much over the years in terms of their legacies. The GOP was built off the crumbling Whig party, which had been based around government infrastructure projects and a desire for high import duties. Apparently in those days, the Dems used to object strenuously to the idea of spending government money that could better be used to catch runaway slaves. My how times have changed. For the Dems, in many positive ways since giving up the South and all the race-baiting in which the new generation of Republicans revels. I’m thinking of running an office pool to see how many weeks into the 2008 presidential campaigns we’ll have to wait 'til a Rovian operative puts out word that McCain’s adopted daughter is a “mixed-race love child”.
There was a time when the Republicans really stood for something other than rampant corruption, protectionism for child molesters and extreme politicization of all aspects of goverment. Found it funny to see Bolton on the Daily Show insisting that Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book “Team of Rivals” is flat-out wrong in its analysis of Lincoln’s cabinet, a view that would not find much currency among historians.

Nugent hardly presided over the inauguration. He was a musical guest.
Have you seen a transcript of what Nugent said? I haven’t, but would be very interested in reading it if you could find it. Without seeing it, I would guess that he was “spitting hate” at the illegal Latino immigrants or at our governments piss poor efforts in solving the illegal immigration problem.

And I didn’t say he presided over the inauguration.
Does the GOP keep transcripts of these sorts of events? Wow. If true, that’s so anal-retentive that it’s un-American. How about this, why don’t you use the internet to look up the background – otherwise you’re posting from a position of ignorance.
Woah… stop right there. You’re “guessing”?
:wanker: Or he could be “spitting hate” at flowers, at puppies and warm summer showers… thanks for guessing.
Yeah, it’s a huge problem. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a cushy job picking avacados or washing dishes in a Chinese restaurant all lined up, and then some gosh-darned illegal stole it right out from under me!
Seriously, though, as I remember Nugent’s main line seemed to be “learn English or get out”. Being from San Diego, I can say that’s unfortunately a rather common sentiment these days, brought on by the increasing pervasiveness of Spanish-language use in schools and other arenas.
Point in case would be my big sister, who, God-love-her, tends to whinge a bit about how she can’t get a job as a medical assistant because she doesn’t speak Spanish. Now my thinking on this issue is that A) we stole most of the southwest from Mexico in the first place so the current situation is basically Karmic justice and B) Americans need to wake up to the flattening world, stop complaining, stop believing self-help books will make us richer or thinner, and frickin’ adapt - or pretty soon countries like India and China will be out-sourcing their low-end jobs to US!
Getting back to O’Reilly’s tirade, perhaps it’s time that he, Don Imus and Hal Turner got together.
O’Reilly could complain how a poorly-picked avacado is much worse if it is picked badly by an illegal immigrant. Don Imus could comment on the worker’s hair, and Hal Turner could blame Jews for how avacados have a big seed in the middle.

My point is that you stated that Nugent was spitting hate at Latinos with every breath. I am just wondering where you got your information. Where you at the rally or where you “guessing”?
I guess you can guess at whatever you want to guess at if you guess that it will help make you point
There’s a great “GOP’s Nugent event somehow misses the mark” thread in the IP forum if you want to discuss the details of the Texas event. Nothing to say about O’Reilly’s screaming fit? Just checking.
