[Overstay] Stupid me, I overstayed 5 days

When I leave on the 11th, I will have overstayed my 60 day visitor visa by 5 days. I know pay a fine, get a stamp in my passport, but what exactly should I be expecting? How much earlier should I get to the airport? Is there anything I can do in the next few days to make this process easier? Also, how will this affect future travels either to Taiwan or elsewhere?

If you have a country to which Taiwan offers a visa exemption (or landing visa, or whatever they call it), you won’t be entitled to that privilege for one year, i.e. you will have to apply for a visa before coming back to Taiwan. That is automatic - there is no point in begging the foreign affairs police for mercy. The overstay stamp will make getting visas more difficult, but not impossible. You may also get held up at the immigration desk when you come back. Your overstay record will show up on the immigration desk’s computer terminal and they will want to check the details.

You have to fill out a form when you pay the fine at the airport, so give yourself an extra half hour or more. Think of a sensible excuse like “I had diarrhea and I didn’t want to shit all over the plane” or something more daring like “I got held up saving three Taiwanese babies and their ailing grandmother from a burning building” and smile at the cops, because they’re only doing their job.

Your overstay will not affect travel to any other country, including Hong Kong and China.

Are you sure you can do that at the airport? I know someone who missed his flight because he had to go to the visa police for the stamp. But maybe he had other problems too, I’m not sure.

It is better to visit your local Foreign Affairs Police Station first.

Or you can be more creative and tell the foreign police that you were kidnapped by a band of sex-craved mountain women at Taroko Gorge. You can tell them these rural nymphet

It shouldn’t be a problem, just be SURE to show a LOT of remorse. My mom inadvertently overstayed by 3 months (she had a residence visa in the past and in all honesty forgot). Her fine was pretty hefty, but the foreign police were understanding of the situation and helped her through the bit of paperwork that was required.
