Panasonic Lumix zs3 - opinions?

This made me chuckle. Those are almost exactly the same circumstances in which I purchased my current camera, and current video camera.

In each case I’d done my research and had a good idea what I wanted to buy and how much it should sell for, and in each case I ended up letting it come down to the last day where I needed the thing right away (kid’s school play coming up the next day, etc.). In each case I ended up not being able to find my first choice (my first choice camera was the zs3, actually) and had to make a rather quick decision about what to get instead without having done much research. I remember frantically trying to use my phone look up digital camera reviews online while standing there in the market. In each case my wife’s patience was very nearly exhausted. I still remember her saying “Just PICK ONE already!”

Glad to hear I’m not alone.

Anyway, my wife called a few minutes ago. It looks like she probably WILL return the ZS3. Now. The guy was a liar and a cheat, so we really don’t want to give him any money. She already spoke with him on the phone and I’m sure he raised his defenses and explained that it can’t be returned, but . . . . he he he, now it’s HIS turn to deal with my wife.

My wife told me her belief that we can get the ZS7 for hte same price we paid, but after the trauma of this ordeal I think I may suggest we move down a notch to the next cheaper Lumilex, because I still have a bunch of other things I need to spend money on in coming weeks, so I’d like to score a little credit for saving on the camera.

If you guys don’t know how to tell a good deal from bad or how to haggle effectively, then why aren’t you just buying off pchome?

Apparently you didn’t read my whole post. It’s not that I can’t tell a good deal from bad or don’t know how to haggle (I spent the morning haggling a matter for over US$5M; haggling is what I do). It’s just that I’ve got 50 essential things I MUST do and I have almost no spare time to do them, so I tried to squeeze a quick camera purchase in after dinner.

As for pchome, I assume it’s in Mandarin, right? That would be a problem. Plus, I prefer to look at and physically examine the merchandise before buying.

I’m still very happy with my Leica D-Lux 3. I believe its an older generation of pretty much the same camera. Looks very pretty, sitting there on the shelf in its wee brown leather Hermes case. Maybe I should, you know? Take some actual pics with it one of these days.
MT was haggling over US$5 million and Jashu haggled a thousand off a wee camera. Is that what they call P0wned?

That’s why I bought the ZR3, for 11K. I didn’t want GPS of the ZS7 and we could use the 100USD on a better netbook :discodance: .
Sandman, you have an Hermes camera case?? Wow I am impressed :howyoudoin: I keep my knitting supplies in a Hermes canvas pouch :raspberry:

Ok, she returned it and got our money back. Now, moving down a notch, there’s this . . .

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 8x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD

or Divea’s ZR3

And irishstu raised a good point yesterday, when I told him I want a new camera to bring with my up Mt. Rainier in the ice and snow. He suggested maybe I should consider waterproof. I’ll be really careful with the camera, but maybe that’s not such a bad idea.

Here’s an option for that (also shockproof, freezeproof and dustproof).

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 4.6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 2.7-Inch LCD

Apparently so. It came with the camera (which is basically exactly the same as the Panasonic, but NT$10,000 more expensive.) Jojo liked the case, which is why we bought the camera. Because I’m a techy geek, obviously.

It may be his job, but if he is the type to knowingly buy defective products from less than reputable dealers because his wife was pressuring him to make a decision, then I REALLY hope to do business with him in the future. I like easy money.

It is yummy :lick: !

Whatever, dude. Sounds to me like that shyster’s ended up with a shitload of hassle, though. Why would you admit to wanting to be a cheap shyster, by the way?

TS2! TS2!!! :discodance:

And a Panasonic Toughbook for updates from the top.

djlowballer: We DIDN’t buy the defective camera. The proprietor didn’t point out that it was defective, but I discovered that on my own, which is why we didn’t buy it. Instead we bought another one but overpaid for it. But now we got our money back, so all’s well.

Yea, it’s intriguing. Not only can one use it in the rain, one can actually take it swimming. Or drop it. Or bring it camping in ice and snow. Or in a dust storm.

But its zoom is only half that of the other models pictured. And, I was reading reviews from customers on amazon.com and at least one complained about how it has no lid to close over the lens opening. It’s always open and exposed, so while it may be somewhat dustproof, etc, the lens isn’t and one customer complained about it quickly getting scratched up. Also, it apparently takes lesser quality photos than the others.

So, it’s a balancing of needs/wants. How important is stellar picture quality and how important is rugged weatherproofness, etc.? The answer, of course, is different for every user.

I am curious, though, will many/most cameras potentially freeze up or have problems if used in bitter cold over a period of 2-3 days? Anyone know?

I think not. When the husband was still using his Canon SLR we went to Harbin for 3 days and in -20 sth, the camera would freeze, all iron body and all. So he just kept it in it’s case inside his jacket and would only take it out for a couple of shots, and then in the hotel room, it had to be thawed.
But that was that out and out metal camera of the '70s, I think this generation’s digicams can survive that kind of winter. I mean they do sell cameras to Russians right?

Specs say this one can take minus 10. Not minus 20. I can’t take minus 20. :astonished:

Congrats. It probably has so many cool features on it that it will take you a year just to learn them all.
Digi cameras now are so easy to use and give such good results that you will be very happy.
And “film” is really really cheap!.. :discodance:

(thats a joke)
Thanks. It isn’t all that complicated, the ZS7 has an inbuilt GPS and manual settings for aperture and speed, not this one. It just has some good zoom capabilities and nice video settings.

Well film is cheaper these days, sometimes the husband uses his SLR and instead of getting prints made, he gets a CD done…but it’s only to use all the film he stocked up on
Any updates? Are you happy with it after a few months? I am thinking of getting one.

PS to that. I find the choices rather bewildering. I want a good quality point and shoot which I can take hiking and traveling. Any comparisons to this Lumix would be appreciated, particularly if the cameras are easier gotten in Taiwan.

I’ve only had a panasonic lumix and I have that one divea wanted. You can see my photos with that camera here: redbubble.com/people/digby.

It’s a good camera but not so great for night photography, but that could be just me.
