The red eyes tell the story: I’d been up all night drinking mojitos with some old students, and then, still nursing a massive hangover, decided to join a buddy of mine up in the mountains of Baling the next day to look for snakes. After ten hours riding our scooters along the Northern Cross-Island Road through the mountains (an epic herping night, which included two cobras, a Mandarin Ratsnake, a Red Bamboo Ratsnake and 24 other less majestic specimens), the rain began to pound down relentlessly and the threat of landslides left us no choice but to hightail it off the mountain. There aren’t many things that would make me linger on a mountain in the middle of an electrical storm, but Manis pentadactyla is certainly one of them… :discodance:
Naturally, the moment the universe realized I was without a decent SLR or video camera, Murphy’s Law kicked into effect and the mountain coughed up all kinds of phenomenal specimens. So apologies for the crappy video, but you still get some sense of what an amazing creature this is. Three days after the encounter and I’m still in awe…

It just depresses me that the average Taiwanese hillbilly thinks of them as just a kind of chicken that requires a tin-opener.
Hesitate to also use the word awesome, but hey, think the little fellow deserves it.

Regarding the cold the pangolin had - do you think that was contracted from human contact?
You mentioned burrows - i saw a burrow on my land when doing a long over-due grass cutting - i was wondering what it might be. Does anyone know if there are many animals that dig burrows in Taiwan? I know there’s a colony of crab-eating mongoose nearby coz they occassionally knock of the chicken eggs, but i assumed they would live near water, which i don’t have.
