This is my first post on the forum (that has been a gold mine for my first three weeks in town).
I was wondering whether it is allowed or not to park a big motorcycle on the sidewalk (on the scooter slots)? Moreover, I would like to know if this is safe - I don’t want it to be stolen after a couple of days ? Should I consider to rent a personal parking?
I plan to buy a second hand motorbike, certainly an enduro, and it will depend on what I can find. I have seen a couple of XR 600 that could interest me, but since I don’t have my TW license yet, I haven’t buy it yet. Any suggestion on that side is welcome as well.
I think big motorbikes need to follow the same regulations as cars. This is Taiwan so the police might not care.
On the other hand anything parked on the sidewalk are “FREE” for anyone to use as a place to put there ass.
Even if the police do turn a blind eye, it WILL get dinged, scraped, bumped, and who knows what else by other asshats… I follow a ‘1m rule of protective force field’…
If you don’t care about it being stolen or scratched/knocked over regularly. My rearview mirrors and handlebars often break because some doofus decides to knock my bike over. Since it’s 15 years old, I don’t really care that much, but unless you buy a real heap of junk, you will probably want to rent parking spots where you live and work.
Or just get a used 150 cc bike. Depending on what you are planning to use it for, if you’re only going to commute in the city, just get a scooter. You’ll always be starting and stopping and you’ll always be packed in with other vehicles during rush hour anyway.
I park mine in municipal or shopping mall parking and pay the fee as they have insurances. My rule of thumb is, If I can’t see it, I don’t park it there. But then again, I don’t live in Taipei so parking fees are not as expensive.
I don’t want a scooter since I will use it a lot the week ends to go out of the city. That’s why I was thinking about a XR600. I want to find a second hand, quite old, that I don’t really care about.
Anyway what the average price for a parking slot in Taipei City? I live near the NTU, then it’s quite in the center of the city. Regarding my job, there are quite a lot of places for scooter where I work, then I don’t think I need one there.

Big bikes was not legal in Taiwan for a quite long time so the second hand market is limited.
