I recently got this board game from GMT (USA), which is not a “normal” board game, because it is a little bit more difficult. There are a lot of rules.
The story of the games is about WWI, which makes it a war game. The object of the game is to play history. To “play” the history the games ueses cards, which can be played as events.
The game takes a long time and more time, if beginners play.
It’s really an interesting game. I recently also came back to Taiwan and now I am looking for someone to play.
Any ideas or someone who is interested in this game?
I played PoG two years ago against Kevin, a Taiwanese local. He owns the game, laminated his map and what-not and was pretty happy when I showed up as an opponent (i.e. not a walk-over).
Too sorry, but I do not have his address here at the moment. You can get to him via the Witch House, he was a regular there loooooong before the Forumosa Games Club moved there.
Yoyo, who manages the games at the Witch House knows him well. Introduce yourself to Yoyo, tell him you want to play Path of Glory, mention “It was the game Uwe (that’s me) played against Kevin two years ago” and ask him if he can introduce you.
Do your homework against Kevin, because he knows what he is doing when he plays. Ask him if you can have a look at that booklet which discusses strategies of PoG.
Just now remember, my then-sparring Partner Robert Lipsky is also currently in Taiwan I think. I needed to get up to Kevin’s level within a week back then, so had training games against Robert.
You can get to Robert also through Yoyo. Robert will have to refresh his memory regarding the rules of PoG.
Also check if Robert brought along GMT’s “Wilderness War”. I played that one against Robert last year and actually liked it even more than PoG.
I know also the film, which is nice. One of his ealier films. Maybe there will be a special about Kubrick’s films at one of the film festivals in Taipei. I hope so. I like his films very much, e.g. 2001, Clockwork Orange…
If you are interested in the game, pls. let me know.
Hey dude, I’d be hella interested in the game if you’re interested and patient enough to teach it to me, and beat the hell out of me the first few times. However, the weather is starting to get better, so, I refuse to be indoors and playing funny if it’s sunny and above 20…I rhyme for the honeys and if you saw me you’d be paying me money so don’t make me take out my gunny and shoot you in the tummy like the Energizer bunny…word.
Hi fellow gamers.
I’ve been enjoying the games club a couple of times, but for obvious reasons it is only possible to play short games at those meetings. Although I’ve never
played Paths of Glory specifically, I’m interested in playing longer games generally. I used to play alot of different conflict simulation games (read wargames).
Admittedly I don’t have the space to host, nor a collection of games, but after session of the game Freeloader I have some ideas on how to solve that
Is there anyone interested in playing strategy games? Like the mentioned Paths of Glory, but also other GMT games like Twilight Struggle, Wilderness War.
I used to be an active wargamer myself years ago. PoG is one of the most popular titles of the last decade or so. So, naturally I own a copy, along with a few dozen other titles, but in true wargamer fashion I haven’t played the majority of the games I own (which is kinda sad, but buying and owning the games is a major aspect of the hobby too).
If you can’t find someone to play against face to face (known as “FTF gaming”), you should definitely check out play-by-email (PBEM) which is the mode that perhaps the majority of wargamers, including myself, prefer to play today. For PBEM purposes there’s a free software platform called Cyberboard that you can download as well as modules (softcopies of the actual games) for almost every wargame title ever produced, created by fellow gamers.
And in case you didn’t know, two standard Internet resources for wargamers are Consimworld and Web Grognards (google them). Both are highly recommended.
I hope to return to wargaming one day when I have more time and fewer things on my mind. But with family obligations, two kids, and other interests, I really don’t know when this is going to happen. My advice to you, enjoy the games while you can.
