I moved into a new place with piped gas, not the bottles. I just got a note in my mail box which seems to say that somebody came by on Wednesday but nobody was home. Are they supposed to come into your house to read the meter?! That seems very unlikely. Is there anybody with piped gas in the house? How do you pay your bills? What is the process?

I have piped gas. Once a month forms are stuck up in the elevators and one must fill in the gas meter reading. The bill arrives in the post and can be paid at a convenience store.
Maybe once or twice a year someone rocks up to check the meter and test for leaks. Maybe they want to check your meter because you’re a new tenant?

At my place in Banqiao, the gas company tapes a notice on the door to our building (just one apartment per floor). Those on each floor will read their own meters and write the number on the form. A few days later someone from the gas company will come by and collect the note from the door.
If for whatever reason someone doesn’t fill in the number the gas company will do an estimate and the bill will be brought back in line with the next billing cycle when you submit the actual reading.
It may well be different for others, esp. in large buildings.
Aaaah! I actually saw the form next to the door about two weeks ago. I guess they saw that we did not fill it in and that is why they popped a note in the mail box. Is this also a two-months thing like the water and electricity. Thank you so much for your help. Forumosa rocks again!
