In May of 2006, I went to pay Taiwan tax for the first time as a local. I went to the basement of the tax office and there were nearly 500 people there. I was amazed at how organized it was. I waited about 4 minutes for the first step and then about 20 minutes for the second step. This was only because the person in front of me got stuck about something.
They wrote down my bank account number to give me my return of $8716. I waited. And waited. Autumn had arrived and still I haven’t received it.
2 days ago, I received registered mail from the tax office. “Great!”, I thought. It turned out to be a bill for over $18,000.
It turns out that one of my former employers had put my old ARC number on the form. It should be straightened out now.
Watch out for this.
