I’d love to carry my entire PC (not the monitor) has hand luggage with me on my flight home. Any chance that this could be allowed? :help:
and what is a proper way of carrying HD through the customs? :help:
Sorry, if this question has been chewed too much before. Didn’t even know where to place it.
Thanks
Maybe you could strip it down to its parts and leave the shell here?
I shipped mine with the rest of the cargo. Got a few bumps and whatnot. Probably not good for it.
I assume the X-Ray mucked up the HDD a little, as it started malfunctioning 2 weeks after. A format fixed it, though.
Bought a monster (largest allowable size) suitcase and packed my pc stack inside with some socks, towels u/wear around and on top and under the unit. Also mad sure I had with me a bill of sale from the shop I bought it and my registered microsoft (and Other) software just in case. Turned out I wasn’t even checked at either LAX–big surprise–or in TO (this was all pre-9/11, mid you). The unit went through three sets of X-ray machines and came out fine. I used it all through grad school and actually brought it back to Taiwan where it lasted another year before it croaked.
But, you may not be as lucky as I was and they might search you. If they do, they are going to ask you for proof of purchase for both your pc and software. So make sure that all illegal software (if you have any) is off the hd and stored somewhere else or shipped on un-labeled CDs before you leave.
Make sure also that you have proof of how long you’ve been away or you may have to pay import duties.
When I first brought my computer, I disassembled it and hand-carried all the parts. On the way back, I got lazy, removed the HDD and put it in my backpack, put the computer in the original box and counted it as one of my pieces of checked luggage. No problems…but I suggest reseating all your components, especially your CPU fan, before turning it on.
Never got asked anything by customs, even though the box obviously said, “Computer Case”
