I’ve been entertaing the thought of buying a PDA (Dopod specifically) for quite a while now, but have come to a point that I need to be honest with myself ; I’m still not 100% sure of the technology to be conversational with those who also want one. Hopefully this thread will answer question that some have been wondering about for a while (or me anyway). Thanks to ceevee369 who already took me from knowing 0% to about 75% :bravo:. Most of the time, I’m okay with the Chinese Sales reps but sometimes get lost so come away not fully informed. Anyway, here’s the questions that most want to know the answers to and I hope a few can help answer the questions ;
If one was to buy a Wifi enabled PDA with Phone capabilities (like the beautiful Dopods), what are your options? Could you simply take your current mobile SIM card and drop it into the PDA and use it as a phone?
Assuming the PDA is wifi enabled, could you just connect to any un password protected wireless hot spot and surf for free (like ones home or a mate’s home or the local park)? If that were the case, then your PDA would act as a laptop and phone. right?
Now, assuming on wanted to get online around Taipei city with the new wireless system (name escapes me at the moment), what would you need to apply for and from where?
If you wanted to surf anywhere that had no internet connection, like a home without a router, how would one connect?
I’m assuming that the answer to question 3 and 4 mean applying for some kind of service, but is it Chunghwa as well as FarEastTone and Taiwan Dageda that provide it?
How is price structured? Best place, best value?
I know this is a fair bit to ask but will help a few people out who have limited Chinese and are new to the technology.
very good questions… unfortunately i can’t answer them… i’ll be watching to see the answers as i am getting close to seeking a replacement for my destroyed mio… preferably a phone, pda and GPS navigation all in one… with GOOD battery life, as i intend to use the GPS… if it’s also got a camera of decent quality, all the better
This is a good thread.
Problem with that thread, Manahottie, is that it doesn’t answer one of the questions above. It’s a good one for talking about which models are out there on the market though, but doesn’t answer any beginners’ questions

Yes
Yes (but see answer 4), it would still be a phone and it would also connect to internet through WiFi (not a phone connection)
Don’t have that answer. Sorry. I’m sure once it’s set up, details will be readily available (or maybe they already are).
You get an internet connection and a wireless router, and really you need a computer too, although it is technically possible to not have a computer. If you’re lucky, there’ll be an open Wi-Fi network which reaches your house, although your security will be zero, and I think it’s probably illegal to use someone else’s network without permission.
It’s whoever supplies the internet connection, not the mobile phone service.
You’d need to ask those mentioned in answer 5.

You would have to go to your local 7/11 and buy a Wi-Fi card, you scratch the back and will get a username and a password.
100NT for 24 hours anywhere in Taipei city
500NT for 1 month.

And see the problem with that also, is I didn’t read ALL of your post.
1: How easy is it to transfer files to and from a Pocket PC (nee Windows CE) device ? Can you zap over a Word document and edit it on the move and zap it back as if if was a external drive ? It was fiddly on my Palm (and it didn’t do Word)
2: Would I be able to use my Palm Pleco Chinese dictionary on it (yes, I know I need to download a Pocket PC version, I mean would they give me a serial number for it) ?

Email the guy at Pleco. I usually get answer with 24 hrs. And he has ALWAYS been helpful. Not one complaint about that company.
Can I add a few questions:

Pretty easy with a Windows-based Pocket PC. Very easy in fact.
2: Would I be able to use my Palm Pleco Chinese dictionary on it (yes, I know I need to download a Pocket PC version, I mean would they give me a serial number for it) ?
IIRC, you have to pay them something for this change of platform, though not the full price.
