I’d like to know if there is any voice recognition software available for PDA’s?
Also please post your favorite links to PDA shareware and freeware here.
Any specific recommendations and software you like would be helpful.

Are you using PalmOS or PocketPC?
Two sites I use for PalmOS are:
Thanks Ben, I have a palm OS. I found a few other sites but they all have basically the exact same software you find on other sites.
Does anyone know where I can get voice recoginition software for my PDA? Or does it even exsist yet?
Voice recognition software on a PDA? Seems unlikely, but PDAs are getting more powerful…
Anyway, I’ve been looking around for some Taiwan-related PalmOS apps and haven’t been able to find much so far, besides Pocket Words (which requires Chinese fonts, and if anybody can point me to those, I’d appreciate it) and Taiwan House Hunter, which I have yet to try.
I’m looking for map-related stuff mostly, but anything Taiwan-related would be of interest.
Any ideas, anybody?
HouseHunter won’t help you much unless (predictably) you’re looking for a room.
I’ve got another one somewhere called “TeaShop” or something like that, where you can keep track of all the flavors of bubble tea you’ve tried. Silly app, really. It does have a “random choice” button though for those times when you can’t figure out what to order. I had another one for awhile along the same lines where you could input your favorite eating places in Taiwan and then use the “random choice” button to decide where to go (sadly, we actually used this when I was living here, for those times when no one could decide where/what to eat).
Oh, and “Qianwan” for very large Chinese numbers. Freeware. And (can’t remember if it was ever released, probably not) one called “I Saw It” for entering info on where you glimpsed something or other you wanted to buy in the future. And of course, the perennial favorite, “Where’d I Park?”
What sort of apps would you want to see?
Thanks for the quick reply.
What kind? Uhm… Things that’d help me get around and learn the language, I guess. When I lived in Japan, I had a little app. that really helped with the trains. If you knew where you were and where you wanted to go, it would tell you the route. Pretty useful with Japan’s train system. Not sure how helpful it’d be in Taiwan.
I just found MapView, which’ll be pretty useful, I’m guessing. Mapopolis doesn’t have any maps of Taiwan, apparently.
Well, there’s plecodict. It’s pretty cool. I’ve learned a lot just by inputting characters and seeing what the hell they mean. Great for menus and signs when you’re having a cup of joe. Has a flashcard function as well. If you really want to remember what you learn you can try supermemo as well. A little funky with the display and I haven’t figured it out yet. Theres a sticky on this in the “learning Chinese” section here.
I second the above post about Pelcodict. Its a great app to have here in Taiwan. Its pretty expensive though. I think I paid around 50$US a few years ago for it. If you got a torrent client set up on your pc, you might want to try downloading some stuff for the palm os and try it out. There is also a Taiwan map client for palm. You can go to Kuanghua market and look around. There is a PDA shop near the corner of XinXeng and Bade on the 2nd floor that has a bunch of software for PDAs. I pretty much use mine for PIM functions, a quick notepad, and the dictionary however.
Palm OS has very limited multitasking support which puts voice recognition beyond the capabilities of POS devices. There are a few apps available for Pocket PC but, despite getting Voice Commander with my WM5 device, I have never tried any of them.
I’ll add one more vote for Plecodict: plecodict.com/
