Penguin Family American School

There are a few misleading statements in this school’s Tealit posting. 1) The position is closer to 12 hours a week, not 15; 2) they do not provide lesson plans, the native speaker is required to do them on their own time; and 3) their curriculum is anything but well-organized. It is a horrible mess.

To their credit, they run the most legal school I have seen. They have a Taiwanese citizen that was raised in the U.S. to teach their kindergarten classes and in lieu of a demo they have you work there for a few days, with full pay, as a test.

This is first-hand experience. I worked there three days and was told that they were all very impressed with my teaching and how I handled the children, but they felt that because one has to go from class to class and subject to subject with little time in between that I might get tired too easily, i.e., I’m too old. I’m 49 and most westerners say I look about 10 years younger ( I have a “baby face”). My third day there I saw a pretty foreign girl there that was probably in her mid-twenties teaching. O.K., so who can blame them? But watch for the misleading statements, supra.

Is it the school in Shulin?

Yes.

I subbed in the anchingban school a couple doors up from the kindy. I liked it. The teachers were nice, and the kids were good students.

I scared the head teacher though after I gained compliance by whispering to her naughtiest student. Her yelling didn’t make it stop, but my whispering did. It unnerved her to see him cry, he was pretty hard core.

what did you whisper?

Wasnt like the scene in ZOhan where he whispers
“Be careful when I woman is holding sharp instrument so close your neck, she may slip and cut your juggular, blood pouring everywhere. I know. I do this.”

I got tired of him getting yelled at 2-3 times a day by his teacher after 4 days. I explained to him that if his teacher yelled at him again and disturbed my nap time. I would beat the soles of his feet like Korean teachers do to their students. The school’s students had really good English so he understood almost all of what I said. It was just the delivery that freaked him out, after getting yelled at by everyone, whispering was completely out of the blue for him and shocked him. He was a model student after that for me.

I got tired of telling an “over talkative” student who would just not shut up, so I wrote, “Claire, shut up” on the whiteboard and got the rest of the class to yell it whenever I pointed the laser pen at it. Worked pretty well and saved my throat.

This was not at penguin. Like Okami said, the teachers are nice and the students are good, I just put up my initial posting so no one would think they’re getting something they’re not.

BTW: I never saw the kindy, I’m just going by what they told me re the quasi ABC teaching them.

I’ll be damned, that was my first teaching job. i wonder if I’m still ten feet tall on the side of the building?

That is gold. I’ll try that. Thanks.

Thank you.

I split off some posts to this new thread in the Work forum.

Good idea. After Belgian Pie’s remark the posts really went off track.

With regards to how things work at the kindy side of this school, see my post in the Blacklist thread.

Anita, the real boss of both the kindy and buxiban, is a right piece of work. She verbally dressed me down in front of the students on my second day for telling a student how to spell a word. I was told I would have tapes and recorder provided for me for a story-telling class they had during the summer camp and was given nothing. Then, after covering her classes for her by coming in well over an hour early in the morning so she could go on a trip with another one of the teachers to Ilan, she fired me for having to take a morning off to take my wife to the hospital.

Do not work at this school, at least the kindy side. From what I saw of the buxiban side, the TD there is actually quite nice, but has very little control over what actually goes on.

I remember Anita. Every month there was a mistake in my pay. Funny how it was never over, always under. Lot of unpaid weekend work expeceted too. Was there still a nice lady named Linda teaching there?
