Pie Boy near Zhongxiao/Fuxing (Closed)

Original Title: Attention all pie lovers!

Pie has finally come to Taipei!!!

Being from Australia, i was pretty much brought up on pies as the staple snack food. As much as i do like Taiwanese food, I’ve been hanging out for a good meat pie for ages…they’re so good. Now a funky little cafe/ pie shop called ‘Pie Boy’ has opened up near Zhongxiao / Fuxing. It’s run by a New Zealander and his Taiwanese girlfriend, and serves a variety of meat pies (including my favorite ‘steak n cheese’), spiced hand cut wedges, and a great Caesar salad. The food tastes great and the prices are pretty cheap compared to a lot of other foreign owned places. They only just opened up last Saturday, but i can see it’s gonna be popular once the word gets out.

Any Cornish pasties at this place? I used to eat those practically every day when I went to elementary school in Adelaide.

As I don’t eat things that say moo or oink, but I do love pies, I have to ask. Are there any vegetarian or seafood options? That would be really cool. I’ll be in that area this weekend, so I’ll try to check it out if I can.

Yeah, i was just in there again today for my fix, and they’ve put a new vegetarian pie on the menu - Brocolli, mushroom and cheese. I’m not usually one for the vegetarian stuff myself but i tried one anyway and it was delicious.

Not open Mondays, apparently. No biggie, as it’s around the corner from where I work. Thought I’d share this to save anyone else a trip there to avoid disappointment.

Fester! Thanks for the heads up about Pieboy. I went in there today and tried it out. I loved it! It’s a cool little place with great atmosphere, friendly staff, and awesome food. I tried the Steak and Cheese pie and a Caesar salad…both were excellent!! I think i’ll pop in again tomorrow to try some of their other stuff.

No worries dude. Gotta love the pie. I’ve been back in 3 or 4 times now, and tried pretty much everything on the menu. If you go back, i’d recommend the Mince pie too. It’s a pretty similar sauce to the steak and cheese but jam packed with ground beef instead of steak chunks.

I saw this a while back and went there last weekend to try out their pies. They are excellent. The steak and cheese pie was delicious and I really wanted to eat another one but was pretty full after the wedges (which were also excellent).

I bought half a dozen to go as well. The mince pie was good too (I preferred the steak and cheese) and my friends said that the chicken and mushroom was even better.

Prices are cheap too. 90nt for a pie, then you add 60nt, i think, to get potato wedges and a drink.

The owner and his wife seem like nice people and were very friendly to us when we went in.

Thanks Mugatu. I’m looking forward to checking this place out as well!

I went there today and I’d also give it thumbs up. But being from the states, I’m no meat pie expert. On their business card, it says “Freshly baked New Zealand pies.” Apprently, they’re different from the British variety, which I understand has mashed potato. The Pie Boy pie was very meaty (I had the steak n cheese) and had a lot of gravy inside. Other flavors included chicken n mushroom, vegetarian, and a breakfast pie (bacon n eggs).

A word about the location: it’s in the northwest block of Zhongxiao/Fuxing, in an old quiet neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle of the two Sogos.

Hi All,
I’ve heard only good things about this cafe. Will venture there this week.

Shame it’s not in The Zone!

Steak and Kidney ?

I went there on Saturday. Very nice vegie pie. Quite lucky - we only just made it before closing time.

No Steak and Kidney yet

On my way out to guanghua to drop a new 320GB hard drive into my macbook, I thought I might give Pie Boy a try. I was NOT disappointed. Pie Boy’s pies are awesome. They are exactly the way pies used to be back home WHEN I was a kid. In saying that, I mean;

a) BIG
b) Meaty
c) With a CRUST!!!

I remember our local baker stopped putting crust on the pies when I was in about Grade three. I always thought he was a tight arse for doing it and secretly never forgave him.

I tried Pie Boy’s mince pie which is your standard pie. One filled me up and the just polished off the second a moment ago for dinner. Like I mentioned, it was big, meaty and crusty too but the best thing was the pastry!!! That was damn fine pie pastry. I wanted to be a kid again and scoop out the meat and eat the pastry as a ball.

Anyway, I’ll be back for sure.

yup, good pastry, maybe a touch too much onion in the mince beef one, but it’s GOOD. and did i mention the pastry? and the potato wedges?

beware they generally close earlier, like 7pm, on sundays unless it’s been a slow day. that’s twice i’ve missed out now.

and it’s right near my house, so that’s a double good.

The vegetarian pie gets my vote. Great stuff!

Not to knock Frankie’s cheese and vegetable, but Pie Boy’s cheese and mushroom is way better (Frankie does a good veggo quiche though - so still a good reason to go there).

Keep up the good work Pie Boy.

Brian

Vanessa and I went there last Sunday. She liked it, I liked it, and our toddler daughter liked it! Good pies, and great prices! Nice work, Pie Boy!

Dropped in yesterday for lunch, had the chicken/mushroom pie, and my friend had the veggie pie. Talk about delish! We got a side order of the potato wedges, and we were so stuffed after eating the pies themselves that we had a hard time finishing off the taters (but we managed, and gosh that garlic mayo is yummy, but even without the spices on the spuds are good enough). If the weather hadn’t been so hot, I would have bought a few pies to take home with me to pop in the freezer, but that will have to wait for a day that I’m heading straight back to Danshui instead of wandering around.

Great job, and I hope to see dessert pies and cookies sometime in the future!

Hi folks,

This is David from Pie Boy. I’ve heard a lot about this thread, and I’d like to say a big thank you for all of the positive feedback we have recieved on here. I’m pretty new to the restaurant game, so it’s a real buzz for me to see that people are enjoying the food and supporting us with their kind words.

If anyone has any questions or feedback feel free to hit me up.

Cheers everyone
Dave

Went in over the weekend. The wedges were quite good. Nice and spicy. I had the mince meat and the wife had the steak and cheese. I found the mince meat to be a little bland actually. Good and hearty, but maybe just better after coming in from a wintery day. When I tried the wife’s S&C it proved to be a lot better.

The AC was not working so it was very hot in there, to the point where I was sweating while eating…Not very pleasant. The owner did apologize and both he and the staff were curteous and obviously working very hard. I’ll give it another go in the near future.
