I watched a woman hold her child over a trash bin the other day - not very dignified for the child or the poor cleaner who has to empty the bin. I think we are back to parents who can only think about themselves and their offspring and not anyone else though - only now I’m a dad and allowed to comment! :discodance:

I’d say the odds are 98% that they are, given that Taiwan’s population is about 2% Aborigines and other non-Han peoples.

Don’t they make up 12% of the population or something? I understand they (and the Cantonese, I presume, because of the language similarities) originated in the North of China. Also some of the people who came over with CKS were not Han (I know some Manchus and Mongolians), although I guess the majority were Han.

I concur. The first I saw it we were enroute to Chengdu in a train. This 3 year old was eating a HUGE piece of pork leg while his mom held the bottle for him. as a joke, one of my friends took all our empty sprite/water bottles and offered it to the mother…she gladly accepted!!!
I saw a mother hold her son so he could do number 2’s in the middle of Barkhor Square in Lhasa a few years ago. I feel sorry for any pilgrims doing prostrations around the pilgrimage circuit there.
They invest so much money in kid’s education and buxiban and English lessons and won’t be bothered to lose a few minutes of shopping to take baby go number one in a proper place.

I think you’ll find Canton on the South part of your map of China - if I’m not mistaken the reason that they and the Hakka are so widely spread across Asia is because they were near to the coast (go figure).
What’s the big deal? Sure, soiling a trashcan is a pretty disgusting thing to do, or shitting on the sidewalk, but a desperate 3-year-old peeing in a bottle or in the gutter? Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

I have heard from different people that the Hakka (and Cantonese) people originated in “the North” and gradually migrated south to the coast. I got the impression they were sort of forced to keep moving, rather like the Roma of Europe.
I’ve only seen that kind of thing in S Korea and Tailand. Well, I’ve seen kids, both boys and girls, peeing all over the place in Taiwan, but have only seen parents holding kids over drains or bins to poop in those other places.
Certainly agree. This “Western” notion that natural body functions has been taken to an extreme. Recall the first time you (guys) were relieving yourself at the urinal and the female cleaning lady is doing her duties near you? or the resteraunt that has urinals and stalls for women in one Rest room? All very common. I certainly agree that I don’t want to see a kid or anyone taking a number 2 on the sidewalk but I don’t care to see dogs do this either. It’s just a part of life - especially in Asia. Take the good with the not so great. I posted once before about seeing a father refusing to take his teenage daughter back down to the MRT at Main Station and she ended up peeing in the gutter. Gentlemen avert their eyes, as I did. I only looked back when a Japanese couple saw it and yelled obscenities at the father. I didn’t, but should have. He was a prick. But, when you have to go you have to go. Seriously, especially you male members (pun not intended) have NOT urinated in at least a semi-public area? I know I have but at least I try to find a place where I am hidden from direct view. To those that are offended by the people who try to avoid direct view, I say, get over it. This is not America, etc.
You live in a poor country where people know no better. Deal with it.
