Please! Help bring TW stray animals back to Canada

Hello all,
I am looking for a compassionate person who is traveling in the month of December or January to Eastern Canada (Montreal prefereably, if not, Ottawa or Toronto are fine too).
I am currently working with an animal rescue group in Taichung city, they have a blind stray cat that needs help. In their shelter, the animals are being kept together in a confined room, therefore, it is almost impossible for this bling cat to get enough food or protect himself against other cats. His chance of being adopted is very little as we all know Taiwaneses’ attitude towards animals, especially the handicapped ones, are not the most evolved. This is why, being a Taiwanese myself, I feel ashamed and feel responsible for that. This is why I am trying to find a way to get this cat back in Canada and hope to find a better home for him.

I also have a dog that is currently living at the same shelter. This dog was initially my grand parent’s dog. Unfortunately, they weren’t taking good care of her, and she has some behavioural problem due to the mistreatment, therefore, my grandparents don’t want to keep her anymore. I had nowhere to put her, but to have her stay in pension at the shelter.
The shelter’s condition is not the most ideal for an animal to be. I am willing to adopt her, but my only problem is to get her here. I can’t go back to Taiwan until next summer, so I hope I could fing someone who is willing to help me bring her here before that.

Whoever can help bring these two animals for me, I am willing to help you pay part of your airfare and will be responsible for that animals’ ticket too.

I have posted this same message in different web site, so hopefully I can find this passenger soon!
I have just discover this web site recently and think this would be a good place to find foreign travelers easier than other sites~~

Thank you for all the help!

For more details on those two animals, please visit the following link for their recent pictures:

  1. QQ and Ro-Zong

  2. QQ only

These animals are lucky to have you caring for them.

Good luck with this. I’ll forward the message to the Canadian Society to see if they have anyone who can help.

Sean

I may have some friends coming to Canada just after Christmas, but they are only coming to the west coast. I can ask them for you though. I think one of the best ways to find your cat a home is to get a local news paper to do a story about her. I will ask around and see if anyone I know is coming back home or wants a blind cat. Do you know if the cat could have her eyes operated on to save her site? How is her behavior when she isn’t with the other cats?

Hello,

I’m going back to Vancouver sometime during Chinese New Year. If that’s any help. Let me know and I’ll me glad to help out.

Cheers

I am so touched and delighted to get all the above responses!
Thank to Sean, he directed me to this site, otherwise I wouldn’t know about the existence of this place and to get all the help~

I think as long as there is anyone who can help me bring those animals back here whether to the west coast or to the east coast, I will try my best to arrange myself to get them back here in Montreal. As I am still studying, I will have to find times where I won’t have school to travel all the way to Vancouver to pick them up. Please let me know your schedule when you get a chance and I 'll try to arrange myself ASAP!!!

As for the cat, I think the damage to his eyes are too deep and too long so it is unfortunate that we can’t repair his sight. However, he is super affectionate and gentle (according to the shelter volunteers). The volunteers are trying to get him treated by the vet now because he has this constant “cat flue”, which is an upper respiratory infection that cats can get easily in a shelter. He has also become very skinny because he can not fight himself with other cats to get to the food and because of the nasal congestion due to the “cold”.

For QQ, I hope this won’t discourage anyone to help me bring her here… Although she is a very affectionate dog to people that she is familar with, she can be very shy and can get aggressive with strangers. However, if you can help bring her to Canada, you won’t have to have any physical contact with the dog since she will be in the dog crate during the whole travel time. Volunteers in Taiwan will help me prepare all the necessary documents to bring these two animals and bring them to the airport to meet the passenger. So “YOU” don’t have to do anything. Just claim them when you arrive in Canada, at the custom and pay for their entry fees and that’s all!!!

Thank to all of you and for your compassion towards these poor animals! :notworthy:

Hi Woudsprite,
Actually, this time is perfect for me! As long as it is before January 4th, 2006 (my classes start that day) then I can arrange myself to go to Vancouver to pick them up.
Thanks for your advice on how to get the blind cat adopted, I will try that once he gets here. I also work with a local cat rescue group and help them set up adoption days for their cats. So, when the cat gets here, I will bring him to the adoption days to try to get him adopted. People tend to have more feelings when they can actually see the animals in front of them.

Thanks for your help~Let me know if your friends can help.

By the way, if they can help bring these two animals for me, the dog will definitely go to the cargo, but as for the cat, he has to go in to the passenger compartment with them. Is that okay??? Because cats’ size are smaller, most airplane companies allow them to be with the passenger and because they tend to be more sensitive than dogs, I will prefer to have him with the passengers so they can calm him or assure him during the flight. The cat has to stay in his carrier cage too under passenger’s seat. :notworthy:

Gotta love Forumosa - isn’t this what it does best? :bravo: :notworthy:

I will email them today and let you know as soon as I can. I have to warn you that they are also planning on going to South Africa around that time and I am not sure if they will be stopping in Taiwan during the flight to Canada. If that is the case they won’t be able to help you. Thankfully you already have someone who said that they can fly over with them. There must be a transport group here who would take the pets over to you. I will see what I can see on this.

please let me know if you still need somone. I would be happy to help you. Either myself or someone I know will be going to Canada in the spring, if that is not too late. I will be going to the Toronto area. I hope the kitten will be ok. maybe she needs a foster home until her trip. I would help you but I have 2 puppies and 3 kittens in a small place, it might be overwhelming for her.

I’m a little confused. Can’t someone just take the animals to the airport and send them without an accompaning passenger? I’m sure you could…but maybe that would be much more expensive? Just wondering.

Iris (a poster here) took her cat back to Europe as cargo and all went well, so I wouldn’t worry too much and avoid causing inconvenience to other passengers (needs calming means to me it’s screaming/meowing).

Hi Schramland,
Thanks for your offer~I am still looking for people to bring the animals back to Canada. If I cannot find someone for the months of December or january, I will definitely try to contact you! Are you a regular visitor on this site? Otherwise how can I reach you if ever I need you help in the future?
As for the cat, I think he will need a foster home that has no more than one cat. Preferably no dogs since the cat is blind and can be very sensitive to the environment. We don’t want to stress him too much~
I think the volunteers at the shelter are trying their best to arrange a temporary foster home for him right now too.
But, anyway, your help is really appreciated!
Thank you so much^^ :notworthy:

Hi Mordeth and Rascal,
Thanks for your concern~
Having animals to travel long distance, especially by airplane, is always the last resort that I can use after attempting other alternatives. There are many incidents that animals in airplane cargo compartments either died due to unpredictable turbulances (noises, and luggage shifting in the cargo) and tempratures, suffer from stress or even escape from their crate and get lost once arrived at the destination. As for larger breed dogs, it is unfortunate not able to have them in the passenger cabin, therefore, we should always be more careful when packing up the dogs’ crate tightly and place a warm and comfortable blanket to keep the animals warm when the airplane reaches to high altitude.
The reason why I said that the cat has to go to the passenger cabin with the passenger is because cats are usually more sensitive than dogs and stressed out even more in unfamiliar situations. If there is someone that can maybe from time to time, talk to the cat or keep an eye on him, it may bring some comfort to him. From my personal experience, I have brought a three-legged cat from Taiwan this April in the passenger cabin. The cat was kinda stressed at first but never meowed or cried. Not a noise!! However, since she knew that I was there with her, she was more relieved. She spent most of the time sleeping, didn’t even bother drinking water or ate the treats that I gave her and amazingly, she didn’t even peed or had any accidents!!!
I hope this can help you better understand why I think it is important to at least have the cat to be in the passenger cabin~^^

I am not sure if we can just ship the animals in the cargo without subscribing its name under any passengers…I think it would cost more and it asks more paper work too.

Thank you all~~~ :notworthy: :notworthy:

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. My friends are being lazy about email so I can’t really say what they will or will not be able to do. If you have someone who said they would help I would take em up on the offer right now:) Good luck with that.

Hi Woudsprite,
no problem, I’m still looking, no one has gave me any definite answers yet. I have to be sure who can really help me bring those animals to Canada and then proceed with the paper work.

I still keep my eyes open~^^
Thanks for your help!

My girlfriend is booked on a flight on Jan.20. She would be happy to help. Our only concern is the stopover in Tokyo. She will depart Taipei at 3:15 and arrive in Tokyo at 6:00 pm. Departs Tokyo at 12:00pm the next day and arrives in Chicago around 3:30. Departs again almost right away and arrives in Toronto at 6:30pm Sat. Jan. 21. Do you have any info about this problem. Will she be able to take the animals out of the airport to the hotel? Do the animals have to stay at the airport? We will definately help you, this is just a minor detail. You don’t need to worry. these little guys will be in very good hands. Have you had any luck finding a home for the cat, if not we will start promoting her situation. We know many animal lovers back home. Please get in touch and we will work out the details. mike_schram@hotmail.com 09 5871 5550

Hi Mike,
Thanks so much for your offer~I am not sure if the animals can be taken out of the airport to the hotel in Japan. The only thing I know is from my last experience flying from Taiwan to Japan, to Vancouver and then arriving in Montreal. My stop in Japan was only a few hours (maybe 4 hours if I remember correctly). There were no problem…in fact, I was treated really well^^ I took Japanese Airline, and I carried the cat in the passenger compartment with me. However, since the cage couldn’t fit the bottom of the seat completely, the hostess gave us a two people seat at the end row~and each time they pass by our row, they would always come and check out the cat (I guess it’s rare they receive passengers traveling with pets in the passenger compartment).
Once I landed in Tokyo, someome from the custom or the airline company was waiting for me at the gate and took me through express line to fill out some froms…kind of health and vaccine confirmation forms. And then, they kept the cat with them and handed me over the cat at boarding time, in front of the gate again!
What airline is your girlfriend taking? Maybe I can try to ask them for more info on this!
It would be amazing if this could work out~Right now, since I still can’t really find the perfect home for my dog and that my house is not really the best environment for her (she chases cats and I have 5 of them), so I think if things work well, I would only ask you to help me with handicapped cats or small dogs.
Thank you sooooo much

We are using Japan Airlines as well. Maybe the animals could stay at the airport overnight and be handed over again at boarding time. I also need to get the documents in order. Don’t worry we will make this happen and we are happy to help. I just found out today that I will be flying to Toronto around Dec.17. The date will be confirmed in 3 days. If you feel this is enough time to get things in order I will also bring some animals to Canada for you, the perfect X-mas present!

I think that is awsome you guys are helping out. Way to go all of you. The more people that see this happening the more people that will change their minds on how they view animals. Way to go :bravo:

Animals in transit must stay within the airport. Check with the airline, as you may need to find the fcility yourelf, as happened to the guy who took a dog to the US through Japan for us.

Great to see, by the way! :notworthy: :bravo:
