I just received a call from the police announcing they would come for a house visit (at a time of my convenience). In the 14 or so years I have lived here I have not once been contacted by the police so I was understandably surprised (and for some reason nervous). She said they want to discuss ‘safety issues’ or some other nonsense. Just as surprising was her ability to tailor her Mandarin to my level and speak excellent English to make sure I understood.
Is this some new ‘service’ the foreign police are offering or has someone reported me for the 23 illegal workers living in my spare bedroom?

When my brother moved house, he was visited twice. I was on the phone in a flash complaining about it to a police friend and he in turn phoned the person who did the visit. The second time was just to drop of a fridge magnet with the number and website of the foreign police to allow non-chinese speakers to phone when there is a problem. It is a service they provide and they are just trying to help us be safe.
Get some flyers from your school. Have fun with them offering them flyers and information about your school. Have an application and try to get them to fill it out for a class. Then ask them when you can visit their house.
I wouldn’t worry about it. I had some nice policemen knocking at my door a 4AM the other morning. They were obviously worried about the vermin problem in the building, because they brought around three lovely German Shepherds to sniff around. Quite clearly I didn’t have any rodents about at the time, and they seemed quite upset about that. Very thorough, they seemed to me, in supplying an impeccable service.
I respected their kindness and generosity, making the effort to get up so early to offer me special treatment, as a foreigner.

In Taichung a few years back I had on a few occasions military police show up with M16s. Turned out it was the old man downstairs calling in tips saying I was a gangster. Haha. I gave him a few presents and no more 3am Mil Police .

Please tell me this isn’t true.[/quote]
You’ll be fine if you don’t have any rats.
I could see a fake marrage if you are from China or less afluent countires but who in his right mind would fake a marrage here to be an English Teacher?
Just be friends with the police. Then you won’t be visited so often. They throw great Barbaques…
Also talk about rat problem. I’ve got a public area for my business on the first two floors. so i’m often visited for safety reasons. My area checked out. I tried showing the officer the garbage that was behind one of my neighbor’s house in the alley (more like crawl space) between buildings which is my emergency escape route. I got the feeling that he did not want to understand what i was talking about. I pointed and he looked the other way. You can’t make an annomys complaint here. So… I let the issue drop. I got my certification.

Yes and no…if they have some grounds for suspicion (apart from the obvious of being in possession of an over-sized nose) they might then proceed to test your urine. In which case if you had partaken of cheese or cheese whip in the previous 48 hours you would still be in for a torrid time.
Well, first say NO! They have no authority to force there way in. Say no and if they show up at the door, just say no or don’t answer the door. On the other hand, if you have no problem with the visit, which option I prefer, let them in and offer tea. Just make sure the roaches (rats) are gone.
Within the last few years, the law has changed. In yesterdays, the police were supposed to come knock on your door and ask pertinent questions, whatever those were, about your residency and who lived in the home. It scared the shit out of me the first time because I had a girlfriend in a very compromising position at the moment they knocked. I refused to admit them and they retreated. Then I found out that it was just a common procedure back then. A few years ago, the law changed and the onerous burden to go knock on everybody’s door is no longer a mandate. So, if you don’t want to put up with the B.S., just say no and there will be no problem.
A humorous side note:
I was living in Banciao at the time and a good Brit friend was living across the hall from me. Next to my friend was an apartment rented by some married whacko that kept the unit just for having fun with his girlfriends.
Apparently, he got drunk one night and called his wife to tell her that he was tired of marital bliss and wanted a divorce. There was a reproted heated exchange. The guy headed out to probably get even drunker than he was at the moment. The wife got worried and told the police the location in hopes of preventing a suicide by her husband. (an admirable example of the female species)
Anyway, I show up at home and see the poilice with a hydraulic jack pumping the door jamb apart on - - - - -my friends door. The stupid fucking security guard got the numbers wrong. I tried to intervene but to no avail. Before they got the door jacked open, my bud showed up and got things straightened out just as they broke the door jamb down and my friends apartment was now wide open and no way to secure it.
He moved to my home that night and stayed in the guest room. He moved back to England within the week, having enough of this shit.
