Police raid on Taipei LGBTQ bar

If a bar really has a bunch of used condoms around the place. It should be shut down.

To me they were targeted for their behaviors not because they were gay. Those same behaviors with any none gay bar to me would be raided. There is no way your bar can operate with your patrons running around naked, people having sex in the bathroom and having used condoms around as a biohazard.

The derogatory comments and unprofessionalism is a separate issue and should be dealt with accordingly.

There’s a Canadian guy in New Taipei City who has a bar and is regularly (or at least was for a while) visited by authorities because a “concerned citizen” kept on filing complaints against it. Nothing wrong was found but they kept coming and there was nothing he could do about it.

The current mayor of Taipei City has been banging on about making the Wanhua area (which includes Ximen) into “Taipei’s Omotesando.” If any of you have been to Tokyo’s Omotesando, you will immediately understand how ludicrous this plan sounds for reasons that are too numerous to list here.

Earlier in September, right around the mayor’s announcement of his plan, this happened:

Wanhua police carried out a “cleanup operation” targeting prostitution on Xichang Street. Eighteen suspected illegal sex workers and two people suspected of soliciting prostitutes were detained; 10 of them had overstayed their visas.

One wonders if this is part of a broader law-and-order (and anti sex work, and perhaps simply anti sex of any kind) project to try to clean up the area to hand it over to developers.

There are literally 100s of heterosexual brothels / “spas” in Taipei. I’m positive you’d find used condoms and a lot more in those places.

I guess to the owners and patrons of this bar, it seems unfair that police seem to turn a blind eye to those locations while their bar gets raided.

Hilarious as well because it’s such a mild mannered bar that barely stays open late. 23 Public had the same issues with an annoying neighbor that I think led to it moving. Google Maps still has old pictures of it ha.

A lot of weird boot licking in this thread. This was obviously a targeted raid against a marginalized group of people. Doing it under the guise of “offenses against public morals” is so eyerolling considering the culture of temple parades with scantily clad women dancing on top of cars for all to see. Can you imagine all those poor children who have to witness this attack on public morals, someone call the morality police!! clutches pearls

Cops are bastards everywhere. Sketchy 酒店 and spas continue to operate, but I guess they pay their cut to the local PD and mayor so they get the kid gloves raid.

A country that brought roadside beetle nut beauties to the world!

But those are mostly MEN in a private BAR, send the SWAT team!

It’s a very bad look for Taipei with Pride coming up. Obviously stuff goes on in these types of bars but it’s in no one’s interest to shine a light into them so to speak unless there’s heavy drug use involved. The mayor needs to come forward and apologize but he won’t because he’s a twat.

I doubt those places operate freely. I’m certain someone is paid off.

Night life has the same game from everyone I knew who was a part of it.

And tbf, the gay spas also operate if they did the above it seems.
