Popcorn Popper - Hot air(p.s. not Industrial/Commercial size

I have looked and looked.
Anybody seen any for sale ?
Great for losing weight, cleaning out the system, munching while watching TV etc etc.
Thanks

I know HOLA has them. The only place I have seen them.

i’d like to know this too! I was lucky enough to have someone back in canada actually mail me one from there because i couldn’t find one here. I love my popcorn…

It’s true. HOLA in Shihlin has popcorn poppers (air type). I bought one and also bought a waffle maker there. I buy the popcorn kernels at Wellcome. Mmmmmm!

Thanks to Lo I have got one.
Love it, especially the cleaning out of the intestines(roughage) and low calories.
Proves that good foreigners can be found here.
THANKS AGAIN.

Does anyone know where to find one in Taichung? Do they have them at the Holas here too?

As is often the case, if you can type in Mandarin or get a local to do so for you, an online search for 爆米花機 at 路天 (Ruten) turns up quite a few such as this one: http://goods.ruten.com.tw/item/show?21003059180256

a miniature one:

some for the kids:

and even one that makes coffee instead of popcorn!

I make mine the old fashion way: In a pot on the stove top.

With a bit of oil in the pot, or dry? One of the advantages of the hot air poppers is that you can make oil-free popcorn, which is good for dieters. Anyway, either one is gonna be much healthier than the microwave ones containing palm oil and too much salt.

A little oil and lots of shaking once it starts to pop otherwise it burns pretty quick.

I’m still trying to get away from the salt and melted butter though; so good! :lick:

To get away from the butter and excess salt, use half butter and half olive oil a few times, with slightly less salt, then a quarter butter and 3/4 olive oil with even less salt a few times, then make the leap to olive oil and just a hint of salt. After eating it that way for a while, your taste buds will change, and you’ll find the original kind greasy and disgusting.

FYI, I did buy one at the Hola on Beitun in Taichung. The downside was it’s pink Hello Kitty, and it pops into its own bowl, but so far it’s worked quite well.

I checked at the Hola (the ‘H’ is silent, dammit!) in Neihu above Blank Orange Space (a few blocks behind Costco) and they only had a Hello Kitty one. Totoro I could live with, but Hello Kitty? Puh-lease!

I checked at the Hola in JhongHe (ground floor of the Carrefour building) and they have the pink Hello Kitty machine there also… It was too sickly pink to buy…

How much did it cost? I’m getting desperate enough to buy the Hello Kitty one and cover it with decals or something. The “popcorn cart” one looks cute, but the only tasteful ones are twice the price.

Went to the Hola in Neihu the other day and couldn’t find the popcorn popper anywhere. Maybe they have stopped carrying it. If anyone knows where I can get one, please let me know.

This really is quite easy and the oil needed replaces the butter that most would add anyway. I’ll never go back to using a hot air popper since it’s just another thing to buy and store.

Convincing point. There is NOT room for another “only good for one thing” appliance in my kitchen. I recently downsized and I now own only four pots and pans in total. FOUR! And popcorn does taste good with just olive oil and a bit of salt. So now I’m probably no longer in the market for an air popper.

Popcorn can me made very handily in a wok. I didn’t know this until I bought an old used cookbook about wok cooking. You don’t even need to shake the wok like you do when you make popcorn in a pan. Here’s the recipe, which of course you can alter to your tastes:

Wok Popcorn

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons cooking oil
1/3 cup unpopped popcorn
Salt/melted butter (optional)

Instructions:
Heat wok over medium-high heat; add oil
Add 2-3 kernels of popcorn, cover.
When corn pops, add remaining popcorn to wok.
Cover and cook over medium-high heat until popping stops; you need not shake the wok.
Add salt and butter if desired.
Makes 5-8 cups.

The first time I did this the no-shaking thing made me nervous but it works like a charm and it’s the only way I have made popcorn now for years. I have doubled the recipe with about the same amount of oil and it’s worked fine. I stopped using melted butter a while ago. A good, healthy snack.
