Does anyone here think that China would take advantage of the current situation? I believe that Bush etc. are now unlikely to “do whetever it takes” if China were to attack Taiwan.
I doubt it. The military is currently on a war footing - defcon 5, its highest state of readiness.
Also, psychologically, Americans would be outraged at any attempt to take advantage of the country’s perceived vulnerability. Even China isn’t that stupid. I think.
I agree with Maoman. Not even the arrogance and guile of the Chinese Government would lead them to do this.
With American forces required for Operation Noble Eagle (home defence) and also for retalliatory strikes against the terrorists, it wouldn’t just be a test of America’s resolve, but a direct slap in the face. And America is tired of getting slapped around.
The Communists don’t need to invade, they’ll get the lot within a few short years. The Taiwanese will give it to them lock, stock and barrel. Without so much as a single shot fired, least of all an all out assault. Mark my words.
China will not attack Taiwan if only for one reason and that is for now, entering the WTC is of highest (or should I say higher) priority. Simple as that.

I agree! The Taiwan bussines community is already selling out to China, it won’t be long before Taiwan needs China so badly that they will give the country back to them on a silver platter.

I’d hardly be talking about PRC arrogance and guile if I was a mainlander. Anti-Commie? Well, that has quite a few connotations. It’s a bit like calling someone who is left of centre, or pro-environmentalist a Commie, pinko, whatever.
I don’t support Communism, even the distorted versions you get in the few remaining communist/socialist countries. Don’t get me worng from the previous post, I’m not supportive of China taking over Taiwan - they really have no historical claim over it, and even the ethnic argument is somewhat questionable. It’s the usual bully boy tactics of the world’s most populous country, and the apparent lack of patriotism by the Taiwanese in favour of making money and having a good life for themselves & their family.
A quick qualification - by lack of patriotism I don’t mean that they don’t love this “country”, it’s just that I don’t think they have any intention of defending it. Very different than if your own country was going to be annexed by a hostile power, I’d say…
