Poutine

Is there anywhere in Taiwan I can buy poutine, fries and gravy and cheese curds. It’s about the only food I miss.

I saw it on the menu at Citizen Cane.

But I warn you, its not what you expect!

Its tough to find good Poutine anywhere other than Quebec. Don’t go looking for Poutine west of Canada either! Taiwan is west of Montreal no?

Depends on which way you look…

Sounds like you need to hop on a jet plane and head for “La Frite Doree” on St-Denis in Montreal. I don’t think they deliver to Taipei

Bongo’s and Citizen Cain do poutine. Where else?

There’s also a new place in town called Poutine House.
Anyone tried it out yet?

Ok, so I decided to check out Poutine House for myself.
It’s a block away from Carnegies.
If you see this you know you’re at the right place.

Now the first unfortunate thing is that there’s no place to sit down.
Which means you either take it home in a bag or find some place to sit down outside.
I crossed the street and sat on a bench which wasn’t exactly ideal given how hot the day was but I didn’t want to take it home and have soggy cold poutine.

That’s what they’re selling.
As you can see, it’s not much.
I mean, it’s really, really not much.
When you get poutine you’ll get a subway-style card with a stamp on it.
Get 10 stamps, and redeem it for a small poutine/fries.

And that’s what a large poutine looks like.
Underneath that there was actually loads of gravy and more cheese.
No, it’s not real cheese curds, I’m sure you can’t get those here.
The poutine was good, but I just don’t see a niche market for it here.
Different kinds of poutine would be better, Montreal style smoked meat would be a fab addition. Hot Dogs would be a good idea to sell as well.
They better expand that menu and differentiate themselves from the other poutine in the city or I predict they won’t last long.

I heard from whining Canadians - yes we have them in HK too - that there is one place here that sells pootang, or whatver you call it, but it also doesn’t use cheese curds, but rather siome grated plasticky crap. So feel happy, campers, you’re on a par with HK!

HG

Nothing like a bit of cheese and gravy on your poontang. Slurp.

Must hurt quite a bit if it’s hot liquid. like hot magma.

or hot wax.

I WAS going to include a picture but i suspect its NSFW and I’ll get banned. pussies.

actually, to get back on topic, I asked a Canadian friend of mine (yes, contrary to popular opinion, there are people who I hang out with who are not just there for the money) what exactly was a poutine, and he said he’d never heard of it. Mind you, he’s from BC

maybe there’s a little connection to the Italian ‘putanesca’ which has less than savoury overtones. please tell if you know the story.

You have the answer there yourself. He’s from BC. So he’s either high, stupid, or high and stupid.

Reminds me of a guy from the US who had never watched Star Wars.

Well, Josefus, the photos from the Poutine House make it look like a nice little snack; poutine is meant to be a meal! Here’s what I’m talking about:

Food of the gods after a long night on the Belle Gueule or the Boreale Rousse! :hungry:

No argument here.
That’s a beautiful looking mess.
Maybe if the poutine sellers here keep adjusting the recipes we’ll get closer to that.
Someday.

I second Jack Burton’s assessment of your “Canadian” friend, urodacus. Even I know and appreciate good ol’ Burger King poutine. Anyone who’s been out partying in Vancouver knows about BK’s Whopper Jr and Poutine from their Value Menu.

Josefus, the cheese in the pic you took looks like melted mozza or white cheddar. What kind of gravy was it? The dark kind or the justaddwater chicken gravy mix you get in the bulk food aisle at Save On Foods? Or does it taste like KFC gravy?

And say I wanted to make authentic poutine at home, what kind of cheese curds do you use? What about the gravy?

The gravy was dark and not overly watery. There should have been more of it on top and not on the bottom though. It tasted ok to me, but I suppose some would want it richer and thicker.

0204 in Banciao offers Poutine with ST HUBERT GRAVY no Curd cheese but it s the best I’ve had in Taiwan… Cain put Mushroom in theires…

The poutine at that new pub in Neihu, the Terminal, was pretty good. It was huge, with loads of cheese and gravy. It was a great big greasy plate of cheesy brown goodness that both inspired guilt and gave comfort! Pas pire.

This thread has made me very happy. I’ve been missing a good poutine.

Would someone mind telling me where the pub in Neihu is? I’m fairly new to Taipei and haven’t ventured that way yet. Though apparently there’s a brew pub up there as well, so it could make for a good night.

Thanks,

RR

Come on. French fries and goopy gravy. Revolting. I’ll tak a dish of hashbrowns with sausage gravy. Now that’s REAL food.
