This is quite horrible news to hear from Powell. In recent times we have been assured by Bush that all was well in Iraq but now we get this conflicting opinion from Powell. The problem with Bush’s optimism about Iraq being able to shortly hold elections is that the forces stationed there simply don’t have enough control over the region to ensure that the elections can proceed smoothly. Thus, now is definately not the time to focus on having elections in Iraq.
While I can understand that Bush wants to have elections quickly to show the world that the worst is over in Iraq right now, and that his decision to invade Iraq was the right thing to do, the truth is that things are still out of control and unstable in that country and holding elections is another unwise decision from a man who has made more than his fair share of unwise decisions since he has been in office.
