I updated the link in the OP. Here it is again: taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/ … 2003359359
Late one Wednesday night in late Sept. 2006, Mark was driving from Zhong-li to Taoyuan City to meet a friend. He was unsure of the actual place to meet up, and actually drove past his friend who was waiting on Cheng-Kung Road, close to the stadium. After making a u-turn, Mark collided with the road divider, and his head struck a tree. He was driving an old 50.cc scooter, with a cheap skullcap type helmet. Another few metres and he would have been clear of that tree-lined divider. No-one knows what caused the accident, if there was another party involved, or if it was entirely Mark’s fault. The police refused to let anyone see the video surveillance footage, and in the end it just disappeared.

Say what?! Wow that is just ridiculous. Taiwanese corruption rears its ugly head once again.
How about Mark, was he able to recollect the events of that night? Or does he not remember anything from the accident?
Ever since the accident, Mark has been unable to speak or eat (except baby food) or stand up or even hold his head up when he’s sitting in a wheelchair. He can’t even breathe on his own. (He has to use a respirator to breathe.) And he has to wear diapers.
So no one will ever know how much he can remember.

I am very sorry to hear that
I wish Mark the best and hope that he recovers someday.

And whatever happened to the motorbike he was riding and helmet he was wearing?
How or why makes no difference at all. The video, the motorbike, the helmet don’t matter at all. There was no corruption and if there was it wouldn’t make the least bit of difference. All of that is completely, overwhelmingly, absolutely trivial, meaningless and insignificant.
The only thing that matters is that poor Mark, once a big, strong, healthy, funny, vibrant human being, was devastatingly injured long ago, it will take a miracle for things to change significantly for the better (though one can certainly keep praying for such a miracle) and the lives of Mark, his wonderful wife and his beautiful children were permanently, drastically altered on that sad night. Hard to imagine what they’ve all been through.
Best of luck to all of them. Jiayou.
So say you, in some fatuous & puerile attempt at wisdom. Others, perhaps far closer to events of that night, felt differently. It would have been nice to be absolutlely sure that he was not the victim of some hit and run driver.

Whatever. I don’t want to quibble with you, especially in this thread. I’m sure you get my point. How it happened is trivial compared to the fact that it did.
It wouldn’t reverse time, if that’s what you mean. But viewing the tapes would have helped ease the frustration many of us felt, and still do feel. And it certainly was, and still is, by no means “absolutely trivial, meaningless and insignificant.”
Not to forget the correction that was issued a few days later:

Any news on how he’s doing now? Or still no change?
I saw his wife briefly this morning…She says he’s doing ok.
There hasn’t been much change in his condition for quite sometime.

Thanks for the update.
Mark and family is still in our prayers.
Very sad to read Mark and his family are still battling without improvement. I cannot imagine what it must be like. I hope Mark gets a great deal of enjoyment from the love of his family and friends, and I hope he knows there are good people out there who still think of him often.
Mark, your battle is not forgotten. You have enriched so many lives by reminding us to cherish those close to us. Peace man.
Any update?
No idea. I think of them often, but it seems news about Mark has largely dried up. I would also appreciate it if someone in the know could give us an update.
Is this about the guy that crashed on his scooter? I gather he’s still in a coma?
I regret to inform that Mark Morris Selikoff passed away earlier today.
Apparently, at his home he stopped breathing, and his pulse dropped dramatically. He was rushed to the hospital where all attempts to revive him failed.
My deepest condolences to his family, especially his wife and two children.
Sad news to hear about a comrade, especially on my birthday.
It's been 6 years and some 29 days since his accident. He fought a good fight, tough fuddamucker that he was. I had meant to stop on by just recently. But alas, time the avenger, and the fickle finger of fate played their cards, to the eternal detriment to yours truly.
Mark was many things to many different people. Some good, some bad, and some excellent. When the Great Scorer makes some notes in his ledger, I hope he will recall that Mark, above and beyond anything else, had a great heart. He was a man of many words, and not of all it diplomatic, but he damn well knew good from evil.
I wish I could come up with something better to say, some eloquent send off, but I'm getting more than a little verklempt. I'll get some poetry set up later, even though I know that would cause him to fidget as if an itchy sweater.
All I can think of is playing some music he liked, and while there are many contenders for this final Huzzah!, I think this one is the most essential. It was one of the first songs he ever played to me, and it remains the most endearing.

Wicked to have known you, Mark.
May your memory live on. I hope your soul finds peace, away from the everyday evil of this world.
The next bottle of Chivas and the next Bowl shall be readied in your honour.

RIP, Mark. Your ordeal is over. My thoughts go out to your family.
