Does anyone know if there is any prepaid phonecard you can use in taiwan. Or will you get billed every 6 months? What network do you all use? Any good?
This topic has been discussed several times (and I’m guilty of starting one of the threads), so your best bet is to do a search to find all the prior comments.
Prepaid cards are available. A regular pay-when-they-bill-you account is cheaper, but is a pain in the @$$ to get unless you have a Taiwanese who is willing to act as a guarantor (cosigner who promises to pay the bill if you skip town). You don’t get to pay every six months, though; you have to pay once a month or else you’ll be cut off.
I use a cellphone pretty minimally, and the prepaid cards are costing me about NT$400/week. I’ll be switching to a contract as soon as possible.
Mine is through FarEasTone. They function fine.
There are probably more convenient places to get them, but I got mine from an Indonesian buffet restaurant on the second floor of Taipei Main Station (the train station, not the subway stop with the same name).

you can pretty much get a number sim chip from any convenient store (7-11, circle k, etc.) they are about 1000nt.
