I came to Taiwan and long story short my original job didn’t pan out. Thankfully they paid me cash for my work. I found a new job, got my ARC and my original employer is now asking for a copy of my ARC so they can report the money they gave to me. Even though they paid me prior to me getting my ARC they said they will date my payment for a later date. I spoke with my current school and they said my old school needs to contact them. My original school keeps saying it will be alright but they have a long track record of not telling the truth. I haven’t given them my ARC. If I do nothing am I fine? I’m read on here if I get them added to my ARC I can report it.
Any advice appreciated.
This will mess up your taxes too, if you were working for them last year.
I’d tell them to go to hell personally and make sure your current school doesn’t give them your information (if you can trust them) guess it depends on how much you can trust your current job to have your back.
If the former school has a record of being dishonest with you, who knows what they may claim for your pay…they could claim all sorts of things then you have a huge whopping back (or future) tax bill to pay on money you did not earn.
It really makes NO sense for them to first pay you in cash, and then, when you no longer work for them and have an ARC with another job, want to claim your taxes.
The fact that you did not ever have a work permit for them either may be a bit of a problem…how they gonna explain that to the tax bureau?
Others here may have better or more informed advice, but this sounds super sketchy.
Thanks for the advice.
My current school has my back 100% and basically told me that it’s their problem not ours. I just don’t want something to happen like you mentioned, they report some exaggerated amount later. But if they don’t have my official records can they even report it? That’s why I think they are so eager to have a copy of my ARC, IDK.
I did work for them this year so I guess there thinking that we’ll report it as if it happened at a later date. I got my ARC in May so maybe say they paid me in June or any time after my ARC was issued. However they’re not on my ARC so I’m guessing I would need to add them and then they report it. Again not sure.
They taxed my money at 18% and I’m guessing just kept the 18%? I was just happy to get something. The school is run by a few incompetent people.
They paid you in cash and STILL taxed you? Yeah, they kept it. This is actually good for you-since there is no proof they paid you a cent, unless you signed some sort of roster when you received payment.
In terms of official records…that’s what excel is for, and that darn delete button :discodance:
This just seems quite fishy alltogether, like I said, pay attention to other replies, I have been here only a month or so shy of a year and am still navigating, but one thing I have learned, is to cover you ass, especially when doing things not 100% legal-this forum is FULL of stories of people gettin screwed over by employers.
I did sign a form that said I received the money. I don’t think that’s enough officially at least for them to report it, or I’m guessing they wouldn’t be so worried about my ARC. Again not sure.
From what I’ve read on here it seems having two work permits is legal and possible, it’s just that I’d be doing it in a backwards order. I’m sure this school cheats on their taxes so I don’t know why they just don’t get creative with the books.
Also if this actually worked I’m guessing they’d owe me 12% because my ARC is for a year. I get taxed less than right? Maybe a little leverage.
From my understanding-it is not the length of your ARC that matters, but how many days (less then 183=the higher tax, more than 183=lower tax) you are in/working in the country during the tax year. So my wife, whos ARC was for a year, still got grossly taxed since we arrived in August.
But, if they are going to claim taxes for a year which you were/will be in Taiwan for 183+ days, then yes, they owe you money. Maybe if they keep hounding you, you should remind them of that. That may be the last you hear from them then :bravo:
You can have up to 3 work permits from my understanding.
they want your ARC so they can use your pay as a tax deduction. They are also counting on the tax department not talking to the labor board to confirm that you had a work permit. If they do talk to each other then there will be a lot of pain for everyone. I think there’s a thread on this from last year but I can’t remember the details.
I was in a similar situation last summer when I taught a class for a month and a half. They wanted to (and did) to deduct pay with no work permit. I didn’t have an ARC and they never followed up on it. I made no attempt to get that money back.
I am not so clever thus I need some help:
Do I read it correctly that the OP teached at his first employer without having an ARC?
Is it therefore allowed asking advice for an issue generated from an illegal act?
Just to get the records right
As far as I know there are no jobs that you can work in Taiwan without a work permit on a visitor visa.

You haven’t read the rules in a while:
“Do not promote illegal activities. Breach of this rule can lead to legal proceedings against this site, and will not be tolerated. In cases where the law has been broken, Forumosa may notify the proper authorities if appropriate.”
No one is promoting illegal activity. What is done…is done.
NOW, what’s the next (legal) step? That is what we are addressing.
Mike, I certainly could do better things than asking for a clarification - which Confuzius provided - and solved my doubt.
If an activity ( infraction) is not in the present , the sponge is used and the past is gone. Fine with that.
I am not a teacher so I can’t confirm your remark regarding other teachers landing as a disguised backpacker , but for sure there must be shallow types out there whom prefer not to pay taxes and work currently as clandestine parasites and doing a visa run once and a while.
First : if you mention that you were aware of their Incompetency and “record of not telling the truth” , was it at that time not clear you might get yourself in trouble without ARC. How many months did you worked there? If more than 3, than it is my honest believe you prefered the cash than having yourself protected- with an ARC as working permit. means you also did visa runs ?
Second - you are a member of Forumosa since end of April. Did it not came up in your mind asking for advice at that time already after being told " it’s ok to work with a tourist visa"?? There my friend is where I see the nose bleeding type in you which is the “alls well - cash is fine”. You are just a lucky guy whom did not end up in the other thread " caught doing tutoring".
I think you are a clever guy but your ignorance or good faith or reluctancy has bitten you in the ass. My only advice is to take your losses on your first position. If you were persona incognito - keep it that way. Your 60 or 90 days tourist visa is a good alibi.
Third : I don’t give a damn about you feeling personally attacked - which was not my aim putting the record straight - but I simply have lesser respect for people whom are seeking solutions if problems could have been avoided. Regardless if required finger pointing to your former employer.
Last but not least, I mostly like this site and it’s community. I even include a signature with reference to this and many spammers as trollers don’t escape my eye. If I ask for a simple clarification on legality of your request which might or might not impat this site, it is meant good towards a community. I wish you luck solving your problem
