Prices and changes in Taiwan (late 2024 edition)

Go nuts then. I’m just gonna keep buying them in Costco or Carrefour. :man_shrugging:

I know my potatoes (yes a stereotype that’s true) and Taiwan grown potatoes are awful, don’t even bother. :cowboy_hat_face:
Watery mushy ughh.

Starbucks is basically the same price as the independents.

PX Mart has delicious Australian potatoes. 75NT for 6, IIRC. I feel a bit guilty buying imported vegetables, but the local potatoes are so bad.

I almost never eat fresh potato simply because flakes are so much faster, and I can adjust the consistency to whatever I want. But it could be because I’m using potatoes I buy from the traditional market, if I mash them they’re very watery. Are Australian potatoes better in this regard? In particular I like to shred them and make hash browns.

Are you pushed for time?

They’re little white potatoes. I’ve successfully roasted them and boiled them. I’ve not tried the cooking methods you prefer, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

This is an interesting topic, as the independents I see around the capital range from ultra cheap, to roughly the same as S-Bucks, to far more expensive than S-Bucks (as seen in the “cultured youth” cafes clustered in the university district). So I’d qualify this point by saying: it depends on the shop.

Yep I agree it depends on the place even for the independents there’s quite a range but they almost all are 100ntd plus now.

I’ve seen crazy prices for coffee here like 250 ntd a cup etc.

People really like and know their coffee so if they want to do that I guess let them do that.

The places you are referring to in the last part are the Wen Ming coffee places right … it literally means civilized and cultured coffee…if they mean cultured in being stuck up their own asses , hating kids, wearing the same boring Korean/Japanese ‘uniforms’ only employing mute 20 somethings , having NAZI rules for everything that they point out first and not being able to interact properly and talk to customers then God forgive us lol.

The other trend is for Maid cafes here Tommy. Personally they are a sad sight I never entered them so I don’t know much they cost ,just thought you may be interested @tommy525

Coffee is cheap. A 150nt cup costs the business 20nt to make. It’s more about the experience.

Do you even know what you are writing?

So you think 7-11 is losing money with their 49nt coffee? The beans themselves might be a little pricy if they’re all using high quality beans but it’s mostly water. Even Starbucks don’t all use high quality beans.

7-11 is part of one of the largest industrial food groups in Taiwan, Uni-President. Yes they know how to make money. And no that point does not support your claim that “coffee is cheap.” It supports a claim that “selling bad watery coffee can be profitable.”

My point is you’re not paying for coffee at a cafe, you’re paying for a seat at the table, the atmosphere, the wifi, the ability to work there.

The coffee is a small part of that price.

I wanna go to Modern Toilet too :smiley_cat:

The point is, in those independents (the hipster ones) you are getting an ‘experience’ or at least for me a quiet enviroment and a seat. Starbucks you might pay the same but what are you paying for? A crowded mess.

Time and day of the week will definitely affect one’s experience at these shops, that’s for sure. Mid-afternoon on a Sunday at a Starbucks? Good luck!

Exact same thing has been happening in Ireland. A lot of restaurants couldn’t make enough profit margin to make the whole thing worth while, it they raise the prices too high customers stay home, if they don’t they don’t make any money. And they still would work damn hard for it. Not worth it.
