I’ve recently arrived in Kaoshiung and secured my first job, albeit paltry hours, but with ARC…
I want to boost my hours with private lessons, but am at a loss of how to get word out that I’m available… I’ve flyered one of the Uni’s yesterday and am going to do another this afternoon… I was hoping someone may be able to give me a heads up on how to attract this area of work? I get the odd email from the Yahoo group down here but I need more…
Careful with those flyers: that’s advertising that you’re working illegally.
Way back when, I checked job boards. Been approached on the street any number of times.
Now, it’s all word of mouth, either satisfied students or other teachers who are too busy.
Talk to your co-workers. Look friendly and wise to passing strangers.

How is it advertising that you are working illegally? It could only be if you said WILLING TO WORK ILLEGALLY on the flyer or mentioned that you already had an arc from another institution.
Somebody suggested I try not posting flyers, but standing there handing them out. It causes people to have to interact with me and I can get their numbers that way.
tomosaurus asked about “private lessons”. I believe that unless those lessons are held at the institution that issued the ARC, they’re illegal. It’d pretty obvious to any immigration officer who cared enough to bother.
Years ago I had a friend in Tainan who set up a little teaching operation in his living room and posted flyers advertising his service. Of course the cops saw it, waited until he had students in his house and came to his door.
I agree with Jaboney that you probably don’t want to leave a paper trail about your illegal work.

True. You could have an APRC or a marriage-based visa, which would allow you to happily advertise your services. But all it would take would be one cop asking to see it and you’d be screwed.
“No-one cares?” Heh! The cops? Probably not enough to give themselves the hassle of busting you. However, just ONE anonymous report from a nosy neighbour with a perceived grudge – which can be as little as you simply being a foreigner – and the cops HAVE to follow it up. If you don’t have all your ducks in a row when that happens? Bye-bye Taiwan.

If you keep everything quiet, probably, no one cares. If you’re distributing leaflets, and a student takes one to the struggling bushiban around the corner where she takes evening classes, shares it with a couple of classmates to see if they’d like to join her and share the cost… well, I think the boss of that struggling bushiban may well be motivated to safeguard his income by having the immigration police bounce your ass right out of the country.
It wouldn’t take a lot to check.
Keep your head down, have patience, ask other teachers if they know of anyone looking for a private teacher, or looking to dish off privates. Then, do the job well; let a good reputation and word of mouth do the advertising for you. If you must advertise, make sure info on the flyers can’t be traced back to you, and don’t hand them out in person.

I would not be soliciting to teach university students. Teaching university students privately is very unstable. If you are going to teach privates you would be much better off teaching children.

Point taken, it seems nigh on impossible to get this kind of work though without walking round with a sandwich board on my back John McClane stlye… I just need to get some points on the board really and go from there…
