Anyone care to explain this apparent contradiction ? (Or why people bring their kids to meet Japanese porn stars, for that matter…! “Here’s Daddy’s favourite” etc etc)
The Autofuckerupper changes the “t” in _taiwan (above) to a capital T, which confuses the poor old TT website, so you will have to manually change the link in the address bar.]
Anyone care to explain this apparent contradiction ?
it is not a contradiction, Hex. It is a contraindication. It was the proximity to the school that got them mad, that’s all. but your quote on japanese porn stars was right on. FUNNY
HEx, this it all it is:
"A female employee at Wanchia, however, said that no pupils had ever entered the shop. She said that the whole incident started after the shop owner had an argument with the dentist upstairs because both premises were competing for billboard space. "
“The dentist asked many different people to call the police and harass us, but we have a legal license,” the woman said, showing her license to prove her point.
The shop willl probably die a natural death soon enough. I don’t think they do much custom.
By the way, if you are in the Shihlin Night Market area, you might look at the new condom shop. It is down the street from the Orange pub near the Shihlin MRT Station heading toward the night market.
They only sell condoms and have a few gag ones like with a big chicken head on the end and such. (Shit, now Formosa has a reason to fly back…)
That shop won’t last long, but it is interesting to see the people in there. I mean the sole product is for fucking. Times sure have changed in Taipei.
It’s a simple zoning issue. There’s no contradiction - the Taiwanese tolerate the brothels as long as they know their place: low-key enough that unless you’re actively looking for a whorehouse you can easily ignore the specialty barbershops. It’s not in your face; kids can walk by brothels without having a clue what’s inside. The sex toy shop is in your face, and definitely needs to be relocated to a more…‘adult’ neighbourhood. If it were near the pub district or Snake Alley or something, no problem.

The majority of the people complaining about the shop are probably foreigners, since the article mentioned that two of the three schools are TAS and TJS. To most of the Taiwanese it is probably

Did you notice how TT reporter, Debby Wu, was afraid to use the words “giant dildo” in her story. Instead she said there was “an over-sized replica penis in its window.”
Where’s the surprise in this typical Taiwanese attitude? It’s OK if it’s “under the counter”. It mustn’t be seen though to protect the national face.
[ul]Taiwan can be proud to have no prostitution houses; though we all know prostitutes are well represented.
Taiwan can be proud of its Confucian family values; though we all know there are just as many dysfunctional families as in the West.
Taiwan can be proud of its democracy; though we all know the country is run by paid gangsters.
Taiwan will likely crow about being the first Asian nation to allow gay marriage; though we all know the majority of gays are closeted and resented by their families.
Taiwan does indeed have good labour laws; though we all know women in equivalent positions are paid much less and denied equal promotion prospects.[/ul]
Need I go on?
Don’t be too sure of that, Wolf. A lot of the people here are very “innocent” indeed, so we might see a few of the cuter items hanging from young women’s bags or given as toys for the kiddies to play with.
It’s a bit like this story: Gigolo school raided for overcharging its students Running a school for prostitutes ? No problem. Gangsters ? Who cares ?
Attention was only paid when they started overcharging students
actually some of the stuff they taught makes very good sense. like how taiwanese and mainlanders insist on wearing white socks with dress pants, or having pants that are too short, or oral hygiene.
these kinds of schools should be taught to many people and could be the next big-money generator. the kids can learn english, the parents can learn some class, or if they have some (cuz i’m not saying they are all lacking), then at least western etiquette like how to use forks and knives and salad forks, and napkin use, and not ostentatiously showing any bodily fluids (from mouth and nose that is)
this is a whole new market. i sure know plenty of people who don’t understand the importance of oral hygiene in social situations.
I doubt any child has ever walked into the store, even by accident. Who cares? I mean, with all the Betel nut girls and things on tv and such what’s the problem. Taiwanese parents are to blame. I’ve never seen so much “Buck passing” in my life. “My child isn’t learning English” Blame the teacher, even if the child doesn’t pick up a book or do any homework.
Not to mention the night markets and flea markets where there are groups of fat, betel nut chewing, Taiwan Beer drinking, “Long Life” cigarette rednecks sitting around and gawking at Japanese porn right outside with their little kids running around and watching too … it cracks me up everytime a Taiwanese/Chinese tells me how “moral” of a society it is … the Chinese expression being 禮儀之邦. The only thing I can say to that is 狗屁.
P.S.- My wonderful boyfriend is very “local”, and has quite bad manners, at least by my standards (fortunately he doesn’t chew betel nut). But, I’m slowly but surely working at him … I make sure he wears clean clothes, showers regularly, brushes his teeth twice a day … but sometimes it makes me feel like I’m raising a little kid … :?
