Pyramid ossuary

Wow. Kind of crazy. Kind of cool. People behind it sound goofy: “theme park”? Still, interesting idea. And the potential scale is amazing.

[quote=“BBC”]It sounds like an absurd idea. The plan is to build a massive pyramid, filled with human remains, on a windswept field near the city of Dessau, eastern Germany.

But the organisers of the project are adamant that this is not a PR stunt. There were pyramids in ancient Egypt, so why not in modern-day Germany, they argue.

“We’re doing this because the world wants it,” said Jens Thiel, one of the initiators of the project.

See how the pyramid could grow

“The new Great Pyramid would be a very efficient cemetery. It would have a huge capacity. A 150m-high pyramid could contain five million stones, it would be the size of six football fields and millions of people could be buried there.”
[…]
“Death is such a taboo,” said Mr Thiel. “We’re looking at different sites. We could build the Great Pyramid anywhere in the world. It would be a kind of theme park about life and death.”

So, how does it work? They haul dead bodies to a hatch at the apex and drop them in?

Nope. Each brick contains ashes or memorabilia.

I like my idea better! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ah, so. Not “filled with dead bodies,” more “made from” them. That kooky, creapy, AND ooky. I like better Chris’s idea–if it’s theme park.

There could be a ride to take you and your loved one to the apex, where suddenly the bottom falls out from under the siffest member of your group and he/she–hopefully the already dead person–falls into the structure. Your family gets to choose whether this climactic event is accompanied by diaphonous angelic creachers, or a more under-worldly “welcome” wagon.

And why not, right. There are funerals all the time in Taiwan that have nothing whatsoever to do with actual respect for the actual departed person.

Yuck! I gross myself out!

Nice topic. I made arrangements for my ashes to be spread over my favorite fishing lake. But now I have more grand ideas. Imagine a company that takes the ashes of anyone wanting to participate and forming the ashes into paving stones that will be used to pave a walkway. Imagine this being done in the Taiwan greenbelt area. All bricks should be inscrided with the donor’s name, DOB and DOD. Great idea. I hope somebody does it. What a great memorial.

All those individuals coming together in their insignificance to amount to something. It’s genius.

Sounds great. Put it in my backyard.

As if the krauts don’t have enough sculptural memoirs of their crematory handiwork!
