Q: Best method to stay in Taiwan after ARC expires?

Hi,

I am currently an NTU student studying Chinese from America with ARC that expires in August.

After (August), I’d like to stay, if possible, for longer. What are my options? Also, if I am a dual citizen with two passports (one USA, one England); can I renew my stay here for an extra 90 days using my OTHER passport without leaving the country (probably not but worth asking, ha)? I am currently residing with my Taiwanese girlfriend (not wife yet~).

  • I heard an employer can “sponsor me” for a work visa here … is there such a visa to “look” for work while here?

  • Alternately, is there a way where I can work FROM the usa while legally residing here (online business or remote work)? I’m assuming only if married or the permanent resident card, but again worth asking.

  • I know I can get married, but ehh maybe next year ;D don’t want to rush things too much!

  • I heard to buy time, I could fly (cheapest to Hong Kong, I also hear) out of the country and back for +90 days to figure it out.

  • Finally, I thought about continuing studying Chinese here, but not at NTU, which takes up 100% of my time. I want to try to find a job in between, so this would probably be the most practical method at first… is there a minimum of the amount of hours to take? I’d like to find a place where you just LEARN and not graded, but not sure if this is possible (ideal, though)… this makes it more fun instead of full of pressure like NTU is/was.

THANKS for the option suggestions guys! Sorry if I left out any details, I’ll be monitoring this thread and can update.

EDIT: How about teaching English? I have a national TESL/TESOLS certificate for teaching English ~

No, you can’t get a visa to look for work. You have to actually be working.

It’s probably not worth it to setup a business here in Taiwan just to avoid visa (exempt) runs but it is possible.

You need to take 15 hours of classes to maintain a student visa at any of the universities. Most of the approved universities (can sponsor a visa) probably have similar programs.

You can teach English if you have a Bachelors in anything or an AA with the TEFL certificate (that you have). 14 hrs/wk minimum to get a visa.
