great article and links!
I do think that’s an interesting system too.
The article is more of the same of what i’ve heard so many times before. The death of this, the birth of that… the reality seems to be that the internet offers SO many options for musicians that it’s unlikely they’ll all embrace one and reject all the others, including copyright. it’ll take forever for big media monopolies to change the way they do business. and what’s more, every computer currently on the market is a sampler/synthesizer powerhouse, just waiting for you to download some cracked software and make your own music, using essentially the same gear the professionals do. well, maybe not all the gear, but the same processing power.
music has lost the premium that it once had. at one point in western culture, the idea of more than one instrument playing in a group was considered heresy. and cathedrals were designed to be huge psychedelic reverb units that you’d enter trance-like states inside. that magical/physical interface of psychoacoustics and awe is gone — or if it’s not gone, it’s changed into such an unrecognizable form that… and with the development of granular synthesis, well… sampled my washing machine and turned it into a bass sound… the errors on that CD were intentionally placed there… a remix album of musical tones played either below or above the human threshold of hearing…
