loved this quote by billy bragg in reference to criticisms of his proposal to do away with the House of Lords and replace it with a PR/Party list type 2nd Chamber…the criticism in this case being that it would give representation to the BNP if they got over the 4% vote threshold:
“It would shine a torch into the dirty little corner where the BNP defecate on our democracy, and that would be much more powerful than duffing them up in the street - which I’m also in favour of.”
Reminds me of a story I read many years ago when executives from the Banque Nationale de Paris in London booked an Indian restaurant for lunch and were taken aback at the dismissive and surly service they got from the waiters which was so rude it bordered on hostile. It turned out the booking was made under “BNP” and the Indian restaurant management jumped to the wrong conclusion. Would loved to have seen that one
