But they didn’t. There is no evidence that Yizhou is Taiwan. But even if they had done (which they didn’t), if the OKinawans, Japanese and who knows who else did the same, that gives them an equal claim to Taiwan right? You know I find it laughable that TIer web sites would go to the trouble of digging up a nearly 300-year-old quote about the state of Taiwan before a nearly 350-year-old conquest to dispute whether Taiwan was or was not a part of China’s “antiquity.” How long has the US been a country again?
Two points:
古 in Chinese just means old. It doesn’t place any time limits on what is old or not. Chinese history puts everything before the Opium War into “ancient history” and everything up to the 20th century or thereabouts in “recent history” (which really is the equivalent of “modern era history.”
TIers claim that China “never” possessed Taiwan. The reasoning is that China is whatever they defined it to be and they defined it to not exist before the word 中国 was used as the name of the country, believing ignorantly that the word was never used before 中华民国. That they keep a straight face while using this quote is a demonstration of their perversion.
