Raid on Taipei: May 31, 1945

Wow, serious stuff. 66 years ago.

The Raid on Taipei.

Thanks for pointing out this anniversary. Few TWese youngsters seem to know much about it nowadays:

Maybe it is just me being a bit interested in History, or maybe coming from a country that in the past was both on the giving and receiving end of (in my opinion at that time unlawful) bombings of civilians, makes me a bit more sensitive… but I feel that things like this should be remembered. Doesn’t matter if it is the Blitz, Dresden, Hiroshima or all the countless other attacks on civilians by all different factions. I feel we should know what happened, and try to remember in the future, avoiding letting the same happen again.

Well, it seems in Taiwan the attacks at least were not explicitly targeted at civilians - but sure they did suffer.

Incidentally, last week I stumbled upon this thread about air raids on Taiwan, still open in my browser. Huang Guang Chen pointed out the following, which quite surprised some young TWese friends when we listened to that obviously well known song again:

[quote=“Huang Guang Chen”]Wu Bai’s song Air raid warning mentions much the same thing about the absence of this particular piece of history (translation and Taiwanese pinyin are not mine).

saw this in an interview of a Taiwan born Japanese:
nippon.com/hk/people/e00083/

Okabe Shigeru was born in Taiwan back in 1918, and grow up in Taiwan. He worked in the print business his entire life. The KMT government asked him to stay in Taiwan to train their people how to run printing machines post war. The air raid map is likely made by Okabe himself.

Didn’t know this thread existed, will post more when I have time.

I’ve met plenty of Taiwanese who think the wholes blown in some historic building were Japanese bombs. Because of course the Japanese bombed Taiwan.

The picture is worth a thousand words. Talking about thousands, article does mention 3000 dead as a result of the bombardement.

Amazing photo, let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself.

Damn Americans, coming over here, blowing shit up.

Now they’re out there molesting our court staff with their lascivious stares…:hole:
