šŸš† Railways | Taiwan Railway (excluding High Speed Rail)

Today’s heavy rainful was enough to take the Pingxi Line out of service; there is no news that I can find indicating that the East Coast Line was affected.

Talking about trains for the first time in 4 decades or so Caltrain got new trains

The new made for Caltrain by Stadler a hitherto small specialized Swiss train maker who is now bursting into the big train biz to compete with Siemens and Bombardier

Super nice all electric train

They had an inaugural weekend with free rides

I was on one was awesome

It runs from 4th and King in SF to San Jose

Very nice

And for the first time I took the Amtrak to Sacramento and back to visit a bud of mine

It’s my second time on Amtrak

The trains are very nice double deckers like the Caltrain and the engine is made by Siemens . They are diesel electrics and much of the US is not electrified

Wonder why Taiwan trains are not double deckers ? Probably coz the tunnels are not made for them

Not sure of its that efficient because much of the bottom deck is taken up by stairs but it’s cool
To sit on the top deck

Oh and exciting for me the L taraval that runs close to my house underwent a five year hiatus when they ripped up all the old track including the foundation and replaced
All that

Finally running on sept 28

I prefer taking those streetcars rather than
The bus

Those cars are about 50pct the old ones by Pininfarina and the other half much newer Siemens streetcars

Only the N Judah and the L taraval goes to Ocean Beach

Technically the L goes to the zoo which is by ocean beach but the N actually says Ocean Beach as it’s final stop on one end
The other end is 4th and King Caltrain station

The M goes by Stones Town and ends up at a Bart station I forget which which also joins the J church streetcars as well as the K

I don’t usually go in that direction

Right! Rusty memory.

N Judah to the beach it is. Then a nice walk, and the L back to city.

You need to visit again !!!
Cheap flights on Starlux for about 900 round trip
As they want to take biz from EVA

I should
Do that too in reverse

I like the sound of that price war. Though from Taiwan, typically it’s United with its double daily service from TPE - SFO that comes in cheapest (still not worth it in my humble opinion—I’d love to try Starlux).

United uses 30 year old rust buckets and has the service level approaching Aeroflot

We don’t have the HSR so this is how we would train to LA

According to a friend who is working on the California high speed rail, trains will run sometimes in the 2030s.

I seen double deckers in Germany, I think there used to be double decker buses in Taiwan. I don’t know why they’re not in style in Taiwan. Maybe because there’s no need?

Really?

I was only like 7 years old back then. But I vaguely remember seeing it.

The Taipei tourist bus has a open upper deck.

This is a thread about Taiwan Railways in the Taiwan Travel forum. Could you please at least make a comparison between trains in Taiwan and California? If not, I will throw the above posts into Temp.

And this thread is also not about buses…

Well you guys all know how great the HSR is and it’s no effort to go north to south on it but what if there isn’t ? We have this in Calif
There’s your comparison

Talking about Taiwanā€˜s high-speed rail, it seems that high-speed rail being so extremely expensive really can only be economical in very densely populated areas

They’ve always been talking about a high-speed rail between SF and LA, but it’s probably not enough population wise to make it work because of the expense at this point in time

There is a private consortium that’s working on electric high-speed rail between Las Vegas and somewhere quite close to the LA area but one would have to transfer to local trains after it gets pretty close to the LA area . This one seems to be finally getting off the ground and will become reality And that’s called the bright line and they already have one line running somewhere in Florida seems to be working out pretty good if this rail line becomes a success that would add more weight to having one from San Francisco to the LA area, but that could be many years in the future possibly decades possibly never

Really? I’m about to look up flights to SF in January and would love to try out Starlux.

Ticket prices vary daily and may be different sfo to tpe and back versus tpe to sfo and back

But I almost booked a flight a couple months ago for 900 round trip from sfo to tpe and back

On Starlux
Would be great to try them too
