Rainbow Hotsprings resort Jhihben - price, experiences?

I just booked 4 nights in April at the Rainbow Hotsprings resort Jhihben. The employee (owner?) I spoke to could say a maximum of about ten words in English and I am now wondering if there was something lost in translation.

The price he quoted me was NTD$ 1760 per night including breakfast. However, for this location, this seems very cheap to me, and I’m wondering if this amount is per person and not per room as I had originally thought (although I did state there were two people). I am travelling with the girlfriend, so this little stay could end up costing double than the bargain I had first thought I had achieved. :frowning:

I am on a tight budget, so not great news.

I have given my credit card details across, so probably too much hassle to cancel now, but it would be nice to know exactly how much I will be paying before I get there. Anybody have any experience with this hotel or can find out?

Many thanks.

Never heard of a Taiwanese hotel charging on a per person basis?

really? well, fingers crossed I got a deal then. I finally found their website but it was in Chinese so I found it difficult to read. rainbow-hotel.com.tw/html/homepage.asp

However, from what I could tell the prices were much higher than what they quoted me which is what made me suspicious. Perhaps early April is still off season, and it was a special deal?

Regardless, the place looks nice and I’m looking forward to it

I’ve stayed at the Rainbow Hotel (Hongquan) several times, by myself, with my SO and with my father, but the last time was a few years ago. The price you quote sounds in the neighborhood of what I remember. It’s a bargain because it’s one of the older hot spring places, and isn’t at all fancy (compared to the Royal Zhiben for example) but is comfortable and friendly. It’s nestled against the hillside so looking up from the outdoor hotspring pools you have a feeling of being ensconced in jungle greenery, unlike some of the other places nearby where you just feel like you’re in the middle of a concrete tourist trap. The downside is that the meals are just standard local hotel fare, and there is no bar (the closest thing is a karaoke room). But it’s a really pleasant place to chill out and soak in the pools, or sit outside with a good book. There is good hiking nearby too. If you walk to the end of the gorge and over the bridge (if I remember correctly) you can find some pretty wild trails good for monkey and bird watching. Another nice walk is to go straight up the road past the Lao Yeh (Zhiben Royal – spelling?) almost to the top to the “vegetarian coffeee shop” advertised on plackards all the way up the road (it’s probably a 20 to 30 minute walk uphill from the Rainbow). The coffee shop has a large deck with a fantastic sweeping view all the way down the gorge to the ocean, and you can get a plate of homegrown veggies over rice and a vietnamese style coffee for a couple hundred NT. Try their home brewed taro wine. Beautiful place to spend a lazy afternoon. (I’d sort of forgotten about how much I like this area until I saw your e-mail. Have a great time!)

Yes, that’s a good place. I went up there with the wife when we stayed at the Lao Yeh, and we’ll certainly go back again the next time we stay there.
