Nothing new or insightful here, just a rant as I am annoyed….
Walking in Taipei, especially when there is a bit of rain in the air, gets my blood pressure higher when these idiots on youbike’s, rides their bikes behind me and ringing their bell…..
And when bicycling, these annoying pedestrians who walks in the bicycle lanes and can’t stay out of my way, annoying and dangerous….
Driving a car is more fair, then I hate everybody and everyone….
I just try to relax. When there are people closely together, friction is unavoidable. I still occasionally get upset about people with large backpacks on crowded trains and buses, but hey, would I rather take a train or bus in Bangladesh? Noooope!!!
Yes, we are NOT in Holland. Don’t ever try to walk on a bicycle lane there. It’s life threatening…
Many people in Taiwan walk around with seemingly no spatial awareness, add to that the use of phones while walking, and you have people walk on bike lanes all the time. Like around Daan Park where you have an equally wide pedestrian area parallel to the bike lane. Still, people walk and jog on the bike lane there all the time.
I know, they have, so cyclists need to slow down, even if they find it annoying and dangerous. I won’t give cyclists a pass, have seen too many reckless riders.
That’s one of my biggest annoyances about living here (which honestly, isn’t that big of a deal). The only time I notice spatial awareness is when a guy, usually in his 20s, is walking to with his girlfriend.
OK now my blood is boiling. Absolute pet peeve! Walkers have the whole park which is off limits to cyclists and . . . the bike lanes are where they want to stroll.
When in doubt, stop, yield, and wait. As you can see from the regulations below, bikes are required to yield for everyone and everything. If you have doubts about what is safe or legal, better to stop and wait than go on ahead and get in an accident.
From AI:
Pedestrians always have the right of way, so slow down and yield to them, especially on mixed-use paths or where bike lanes are marked on sidewalks.
