Incredibly pleasant experience, I’m astonished: went in at open, sat, told what I want to do (change name to my Chinese and ID to my APRC), she started typing, signed a few papers, done!
They gave no shit on why I wanted to do that, lovely

I straight up refused many years ago. They processed it for me without that deposit.
A few years after I came full circle and tried to sign up with CHT again. One branch wouldn’t let me bypass the deposit so I went to the branch down the street and they put it through for me.
CHT is interesting as every office is their own fiefdom with their own rules they can make and break depending on the employees mood. The other 2 tend to follow corporate orders well and you need a corporate override
The big 3 carriers all waived the deposit when I pulled a Karen but the two small carriers who thankfully no longer exist wouldn’t budge at all (GT Telecom and TStar)
It must be fucking Christmas at CHT, they keep giving.
So after I successfully changed my name and put my APRC as ID number, out of the blue they called me and said “terribly sorry Sir, but since you are an APRC holder we incorrectly asked you to pay the deposit, please do come at your earliest convenience to the store to get the full cash refund”.
And so it was! Just got my 2.9K back! I am speechless in the best of ways possible! Now still some issues here and there due to the change of particulars, but will sort them out. So far CHT wins over both TWM (lets me use Chinese and APRC number) and FET (no deposit at the end and better coverage).
It’s just like banks!
Really, despite some of the bullshit CHT gives me, I’ve generally been very happy, especially considering all the posts here on Forumosa that have been very gloomy.
For mobile, their prices are decent and their coverage is good. For home internet, they still have the whole throttling bullshit (150GB usage per day for 3 days and they lower your speed), but that applies to everyone.
I’m surprised people even mention deposits here, I’ve never been asked for a deposit.
There still are many reasons to complain, but I feel the treatment of foreigners has gotten better over the years.
wasn’t aware of this. Is there any tier that has no throttling?
They only do this for 1G and 2G subscriptions. 150GB is only for the 1G home plan, there’s a higher limit for 2G home and 1G/2G commercial plans.
Once you exceed the daily limit, you’ll receive a text message warning you.

Translated:
1G/1G home or 2G/2G home plans are only available to individuals applying with their personal identification numbers. If the daily traffic (total uplink and downlink) exceeds 150GB or 250GB respectively for three consecutive days, the company may, upon notification, adjust the service speed limit to 300Mbps/300Mbps (Best Effort) for the following two consecutive days. The applied-for speed will be restored after the adjustment period.
1G/1G commercial or 2G/2G commercial plans are open to all individuals. If the daily traffic (total uplink and downlink) exceeds 200GB or 300GB respectively for five consecutive days, the company may, upon notification, adjust the service speed limit to 500Mbps/500Mbps (Best Effort) for the following two consecutive days. The applied-for speed will be restored after the adjustment period.
ok, so 500M has no thresholds, good, it seems my house not reached by 1G service anyways.
That would be funny if 500M had no limit as one can still max out about 5TB per day. ![]()
Yes I can’t remember being asked for a deposit for about 20 years ? Might have been but can’t remember.
Isn’t it frustrating when you want to fight and they give you a great customer service instead?![]()
I can’t remember if I paid one last year… but a friend was helping me sign up… maybe I did.
