Rarely seen animals in Taiwan

Seen on my walk this morning.

Buzzed my head and landed on telephone pole.

It could also be a banded snake eel. They look identical (to me, at least). Either way, that’s what I tell myself when I see them, quite frequently, when I snorkel offshore around Kenting.

Wow, that’s awesome. More amazing evolution as was just being discussed here!

I wonder if we’re the only animal that goes vegan… :ponder:

Most Animalia on land are vegan, otherwise there won’t be enough food to go around for carnivores.

No but waking up one day and going, yeah nah I’m off the bacon.

Even herbivores will eat meat, cows have been known to eat a rabbit or two. But there’s a reason why they have 4 stomachs, because grass isn’t particularly nutrient dense.

I saw one of this doing the same too. What the name of the insect?

In my house we call them smashit.

Do they do that on purpose when there are plenty of grass to graze? Even vegans are known to eat a person or two when they are starving to death.

I’m not sure, I read about it somewhere though.

That is remarkably similar wow except for the typical eel ‘keel’ on its back. Looking at the video I think this is still a sea snake because it’s sleeping in the day time , locked into the rock, and I didn’t see any keel.

Video here.

Saw four grey whales while whale watching yesterday in Taidong. They dived immediately when we got close.
Also saw tonnes of Spinner dolphins and Risso’s dolphins. My hopes were low going out so I was pleasantly surprised.
Recommend it ! Take from Chenggong harbour.

How much is it to go whale watching?

Somehow that rock looks like a bigger serpent is eating the sea krait. Great shot!

Yeah. Looks like a t-rex head

A entire herd of Sambar deers migrating. Not rare elsewhere, pretty rare in Taiwan.

I think this was taken on Route 18? This pangolin was trying to cross the road, but was scared by fast moving vehicles. The photographer tried to escort it safely to the other side.

I saw otters today!

Came around a corner on a small road in Taitung and spooked them. At first I thought they were monkeys because I saw a lot of moneys today, then one turned and looked at me. Immediately I saw it was an otter, but I didn’t know Taiwan had any. Just Googled it, and yup, otters

Apparently there are no more otters in Taiwan. Maybe some people abandoned their otters pets?
