Ratting out other foreigners

I’d piss on TC if he was on fire, but only if he admitted to AGW and said “I love Obama!”

As to the OP, a rat is a rat.
… You also meet people you wouldn’t dream of associating with in your home country, simply because they speak English.

Even most Taiwanese assume that all foreigners are friends of each other … my business partner and my wife both always tell me when foreigners arrive at the eatery … your friends just came in … my usual answer … ‘I have NO foreigner friends in Taiwan’ … :roflmao:

my usual reply…“I have no friends” :sunglasses:

So far, from the bar, we have…

HardBall got it rolling with:

The Scotts git clarified with:

Thank goodness I made a vow to drink no whisky younger than 12 yrs old.
Admiral Bismarck proffered:

Big John offered:

Now I know what that wet-feeling on my leg might be.

Well said. Good words than should be part of the packet of info for new arrivals on the island.

Great emoticons. Should be added to the arsenal here.

This thread has great potential. I’m thinking a new ‘duck boy’ thread in the making.
I’m just gonna set here on the side and watch the Friday Funnies unfold…

also to the OP

I would like to know one very pertinent fact, was the original “Teacher A” fired for refusing to do kindie? If so, that kind of really makes this turn full circle and the story becomes

Teacher A is fired for refusing to teach illegally and tries to claim that being forced to work an illegal job is illegal (even if he is contracted to it since you cannot induce to break the law), school FLP and CLA all ignore his pleas.

Enter, Teacher B, Mr. Arrogant, who has a “band”, a “hot chick” and thinks the world is his oyster shows up and says,
“Meh, Asia is backward, and I’m from Cantookystan so the cops can’t do anything to me. So what if it’s illegal, the local run red lights, why cant I break immigration and employment law - its all the same.”

Thereafter, Teacher A takes photos of B teaching illegally, shops him to the pigs (not portugal/italy/greece spain, but the Popo) and the school is forced to rehire him without kindy because he knows its illegal and he’s making a rightous stand against the exploitation of foreigners by buxiban owners. Plus the “hot chick” is the village bike/betalnut girl and the 2-man band was crap so he was actually doing the kid (and 'foreign community") 3 favours in one.

I think Mr. Jimi P is happy this isnt in the animals forum, although mods, I think teacher A is also gauky looking and has been known to chase cats so maybe it should be moved to “pets and animals”.

The other current Taichung outrage is a lot more interesting. This fat pinhead guy sued his ex-girlfriend for defamation of character, and in the settlement she had to take a classified ad in the Taipei Times apologizing to him. Public opinion is currently at 100% in favor of tarring and feathering the pinhead.

“Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride.”
Fellow foreigner?
Where?
Unless there is previous trust involved, then who the fugg is he to me?
Brother Rat, that’s who!

Victoria B.C.'s own great NoMeansNo has something to be said about that.

Not much more to it. She is a sweet girl with bad taste in men. He is an idiot. Everyone* is pissed off at him.

Taipei Times doesn’t put their classifieds online (as far as I know), but grab any issue from last week to see the ad.

  • Where “everyone” means all of the people in the bar Wednesday night, an obviously incontestable definition.

Well, if she is one of those psycho xiaojie types that pastes pictures of her exes everywhere telling people to beware of Joe Foreigner because he’s a “bad guy”, when he just didn’t want to date her anymore (or take no for an answer), then she got what she deserved.

Hmmm… :ponder: So why is he an idiot? What did he, she and they do? Details, man!

I think you’re exaggerating, Bis. It would cost at least NT$100,000 to buy Tainan County, and I’m sure you wouldn’t have collected much more than half that amount from those deportations.
Well, if they start offering rewards, I may consider getting in the ratting business and achieve my goal of Tainan county ownership all the quicker!

That has got to be the most awful rendering of noise being passed off as music that I have ever heard. Seriously. My ears are bleeding!

You’re FAT? My granny would have said you’re just big-boned.
No no no, your syntactical analysis is all fucked up as usual. “This fat pinhead guy” means “a fat pinhead guy who is not me”. Besides, as many Forumosans can attest, I’m not fat. And while I’m undeniably a pinhead, even I would not litigate for defamation of my good character when no such character exists.

Now here’s the kicker: I am having strong PM-influenced suspicions that the kindie teacher rat and the ex-girlfriend suing pinhead are the same person.

Yeah…what Sandy said about that “fellow foreigner” shit. Most wouldn’t cross the street to piss on you if you were on fire. Act accordingly.

While I may well think the ratbag is a POS for doing what he did, if anyone is going to bust his nut it can only be the person he ratted on. Unless that person owed you money, and because of his expulsion he cannot and will not repay you the money, don’t feel that this gives you free hand in cleaning his clock - but thats another matter.

While I wouldn’t trust the ratbag and certainly wouldn’t associate with him, retaliation would not be ‘fair’ on your part. Its not in your provenance to do so.
Although making everyone he came in contact with aware of what a walking piece of shit he appears to be is fair play.

Bottom line is, in case you haven’t been paying attention - DON’T BREAK THE RULES.
You leave yourself open for manipulation by those who know the game better than you…
I guess that i meant fellow foriegners as in others that fall under both the labor board( CLA) and foreign affairs’ jurisdiction.

There are about 500 kindyworkers in Taichung in that very situation right now. Raids, payoffs, yet the entire elite continue to send their kids. They aren’t making it illegal to send your child to all day English kindergarten are they? In fact, foreigners aside, they create a place of work for loads of people.

Its pretty easy to see if a school would burn you or not. If its run like a happy family, then reassurances of legal safety can be trusted. Call me simple and naive if you want Hardball or Sandman. If we lump the islands population into the “no steam off piss” category it’s hard to see why any one would like it here.

If you have been screwed into a socket as a replacement to a teacher or get treated like show dog then of course you run that risk, and should be worried. The kindergarten business is currently shrinking due to the amazingly low birthrate. The chance for a crappy boss to make their workers fight over pitiful wage and horrifying work conditions is huge.

I don’t advocate breaking the rules, i’m certain people know the game better than i do. But there are still choices (illegal ones) that you can make that improve the lives of children, your own life, and provide a living for you at the same time. There are still kindys that are about improving and preparing the children for their life as it will occur.

And if you’re teaching kindy it’s only a matter of time. Unless you get lucky. Or someone rats on you. Or you break up with your local girlfriend and she gets pissed (and she probably will).

As I stated before: If all foreign teachers just refused to teach kindy it would only be a matter of time before the Laobans and parents pressured the right people into changing the law. Until then, good luck. Don’t forget to look over your shoulder. Never know who you might piss off.

No, it isn’t. That only works if they give you an ARC. Even then…maybe. Check the Uncle Sam thread.

Not unless you are a part of the family.

I don’t know you, so I couldn’t say with any certainty. What I think is that you assume way too much in your favor. You mention how kindies are getting harder to fill. That makes the business cut-throat. Schools rat on one another even in good times. The anomaly here is that a teacher did in another teacher. It’s rare, but not unheard of, really.

What you do is this: teach like hell, improve your skills, get a good reputation, and then get a job at a school that provides real security in the form of a real ARC.

Getting the ARC should always be the goal of any long term teacher /editor/ proofreader / writer.

Or get married and do whatever the hell you want…which fyi, is why most of the older gentlemen who frequent these boards find your story so endearing and like, so entirely solvable.

:noway: No, what you do is take a job at a school that provides an ARC from the outset, and don’t risk everything by teaching illegally. AT such a school, teach like hell, improve your skills, get a good reputation, and then move on to a better job at a school (or elsewhere) that also provides an ARC.

You can just pay your dues at a chain with an ARC. People are often too snooty to do that and chase that extra few NT an hour (even if they are total newbs or only have a few years’ experience) and assume they won’t get caught.

Not looking down on anyone who works illegally, but at the same time it’s stupid to complain if you get caught. There’s little enough regulation of kids’ education in Taiwan.

Exactly.

When I arrived I had no idea it was illegal to work at a kindy. They were advertising for a foreign teacher on the internet, I was replacing a foreign teacher who had worked there for a year, how would I have known it was illegal? Reading this now I’m only really starting to understand how lucky I was not to have been deported. We don’t need to forget our own rookie mistakes so quickly, do we?

No. I wasn’t teaching kindie, but anqingban for a famous chain who were apparently ‘waiting for their license to be formalised’, according to head office’. Used to have to scoot upstairs and hide out at this Thai meditation centre when we got raided. The situation there is not particularly risky, though.

I’ve also deliberately worked illegally because I couldn’t be shagged with it all for various reasons. Given the turf war that was going on in Minsheng east road, the posh bit with all the parks area, at that time, I was lucky not to get busted. But hey, I knew the risks and didn’t get caught.

I’ve also known furriners get ratted out by some whackjob furriner who got booted off the playbill, when performing live. Use a stage name. ‘Yes, sir, I am Mr Donald Duck, sir. Now, I’ve mislaid my ARC today, but I’ll be sure to bring it by tomorrow! Yes, that D-U-C-K. Yes, I’m Canadian.’

So yes, TH, you do have a point that newbs don’t always know. They have an ARC in their hand, and the school haven’t told them their job is illegal. Why would they suspect they are being had? But if you do it knowingly because you’re on the make and don’t want to take the pay hit or the tax hit of a legal job, or they will only give it to you if you have a JFRC or APRC or student papers, then you just have to suck it up, if it goes wrong. Yes, it’s illogical, stupid, racist, etc, but most countries’ immigration and work policies are.
