Sheesh … what in the heck is going on today??? Seems like stories like this have been coming out of the woodwork. What does an attractive young woman like that see in a 13 year old elementary school student?

I pity the woman. Clearly she has some psychological issues that made her bonk with a kid, but basically she fucked up her life for nothing. I am sure the boy is alright and there was no harm done to him in any way.
So why are people talking about up to 100 years in prison? For what? She should be put into some institution for mental disorders until she gets her life back together, and not be sent to prison for this.

She shouldn’t be shut up anywhere or subject to any kind of criminal sanctions. A stern talking to, dismissal from her job, embarrassment at the public disclosure of her little fling, and her husband’s angry disappointment would be more than enough to convince her of the error of her ways (which is not exactly a heinous error, and certainly a lot less worthy of reprobation than any run-of-the-mill act of violence, shafting of shareholders, drunk driving, or a thousand other transgressions of the law that would barely register a blip on the radar of societal outrage).
But seriously … and maybe the women on the board could chime in on this one … what is attractive or sexually satisfying about a 13 year old boy? Underdeveloped penis, no sexual experience (i.e. no skill, unless he was very sexually active from the age of 10), etc. Has anyone see what the boy that Mary Kay LaTourneau boinked looked like? He was not doin’ it (i.e. was NOT cute AT ALL). I just don’t get it …
Back when my boyfriend had just turned 16, he met a 37 year old Canadian English teacher here … and you can guess what happened. I’ve also chatted online with some really young guys, like 15 or 16 who have 30+ year old lovers. It seems to be quite common in the Taiwanese gay world for young guys to be with much older guys (my BF thinks I’m young … and I’m already 27 … he’s 19). It was the same way in ancient China, so I guess the tradition never died out. But the 30+ guys with 15 year old boys (that’s junior high school age) really freaks me out. I think those guys should be stoned (and it’s not just foreigners, there are many more Taiwanese guys who are into that … just take a walk through 228 Park one night and pay attention … there are LOTS of “guai shushu” (lit. "strange uncle) hanging around there trying to pick up junior high school boys …
She must be seriously messed up, that woman. I mean, she is hot, she could probably land any guy she wanted, and yet she chose to bang a 13 year old? Methinks the lady has some issues.

Ignore for the moment the fact that the woman is very attractive. Maybe, like most pedophiles, she feels inadequate, and is more comfortable with children. In a relationship with an inexperienced child, the adult is definitley in control, and is the more experienced one. In a relationship between two adults, there are power issues, which many may feel unable to handle. For someone who is scared of sex, a child is easier to deal with than an adult.
On the other hand, some 13-year-old boys still look like boys, and some, even in Taiwan, don’t. Maybe the guy in question is 6 feet tall and looks like a man, more or less. I still wouldn’t approve of the teacher’s behavior, but the attraction issue would be easier to understand.
Sort of off-topic (but not too much I hope), in one of my law classes the question was raised as to whether we have a “right” to prosecute (persecute?) the teacher. The reasoning is that we live in a country where 13 and 14 year olds are convicted as adults and sentenced to life in prision, therefore how can we presume that they are not capable of making a decision to have consensual sex with an adult? I agree that the teachers have some serious psychological issues if they are attracted to a 13 year old boy, but I also agree that we have a double standard for defining the mental capacity of what a 13 year old is. Anyone else have an opinion?

This isn’t a woman thing, it’s a pedophile thing, imo.
Right on the money. What interests me most about this issue is how society (and maybe posters on this forum??) might look at this situation differently considering it is an adult female and young boy, versus adult male and young girl. It seems to me that society really frowns on the latter case more. Having said that, I did notice in the article that she is currently charged with many counts of statutory rape.
