Hi,
I have just talked to a Taiwanese and he claims that if I miss the postman, the package will be immediately returned to the sender. I find it very unlikely so how does it work if I miss the postman? I assume it’s stored for some period in the local post office branch, right?
How does it work if I get something delivered by USPS? Are these packages handled by the local post office (aka the same rules apply)?

Yes, it will go back to the local sorting office and they will stick a little note on your letterbox telling you where to pick it up. IIRC they will try to deliver a couple of times before doing this. Taiwan post is usually pretty good. They wouldn’t send it all the way back to whereever just because you’re out at work.
USPS is handled by the post office. Same thing applies: it’ll be held at the sorting office if you can’t take delivery.
You can always use poste restante at the GPO (North gate).
But most of the people there are bit retarded, so sometimes your stuff will be there
and they won’t know what poste restante is, where they keep the stuff, the diffference between first and last name,
that Dave and David could be the same people etc etc.
You’ll soon find out who the smart woman there is if you do start using the service.
