I tried using Google Voice as a workaround to have a truly global mobile number to receive SMS messages. However, I got a couple services tell me it was an “invalid number” when I tried to use it to receive SMS verification texts. Had to resort to using my actual iPhone US mobile number to receive the texts. This was in USA and Europe in past few months.
I wish it were not so. Would have been the perfect solution to travelling abroad with a phone
