Still having trouble with burning DVD and I suspect that Nero might be at fault, so I upgraded to version 7 and updated it, yet once again the burn process fails, rendering the media useless. Tried a different drive and two types of discs (DVD-R, DVD+R).
What I need is a simple DVD burning software, mainly for data discs (backup). What’s recommended?
It’s an internal drive which I took it out of the external housing but it doesn’t have any make or model on it.
I also tried my laptop’s built-in DVD writer (which I suspect to be faulty, but trying doesn’t hurt, right?), same problem though it only comes up at the end of the process, with the external one the error pops up after a minute or so.
BurnAware Free Edition looks good however, simple and easy to use. Nero is just bloated and slow, it also keeps on crashing when I want to exit it. Have completely removed it from my system now.
I had my company laptop send to Asus to replace the LCD cover and check the DVD drive, they said it needed replacement, too. Which would cost NTD6000 but my company couldn’t afford it (well, they didn’t want to …). Actually I don’t know if they really checked it or just want to make a quick buck.
Edit:
Did some googling about the internal drive - seems to be a common failure, i.e. it’s a hardware problem. Burning yet another DVD at the slowest speed gave the same result. I am not quite sure though why there is a problem with the external drive, too …
I think I had the exact same problem some time ago. I wasted a lot of DVDR’s and CDR’s (regardless which format); all would fail. Also tried different drives, internal ones too. I tried everything I could find on the internet for troubleshooting this… symptom. Finally I gave up after weeks and sold that laptop (to my company; they knew the problem). I still don’t know what was wrong with that laptop… Before, it had worked well. The burners I tried worked well with other PCs or laptops by the way.
Yeah, it’s weird. That external drive belongs to our company and works with my colleagues’ PCs / laptops. Did a backup with it a few months back myself, but no luck this week.
5566 is right, and he made me think of another thing. If this is thru USB, then some other software on your computer could be interrupting the connection. Logitech has been known to do this sort of shit (in my experience). Also, personal firewall software. You might want to have a look at what software you can disable while you’re burning the DVD.
Timely thread…I have recently seen my DVD/CD Burner not function.
I have a ‘play only’ CD/DVD internal unit and a DVD-R/W/CD-R/W burner. Both still function as players, however recently they burner unit has stopped finding the CD or DVD in the thing.
I have been using Nero and DL’d the BurnAware prog mentioned on here and tried it.
Both still do not see the blank disk, either CD or DVD, in the burner tray.
All hardware is said to be “functioning properly” when I check the properties thing.
Any suggestions?

Thanks to both of you, I will check that out. The laptop has a USB1.x only and the Asus USB mouse is made by Logitech, so I will try the external burner once more at the slowest speed and with the mouse disconnected.

Actually, if it has the Logitech software installed (or a variation thereof), it might still fark things up, even if the mouse is detached. You may need to go into the Task Manager and try stopping things in there.
The USB 1.1 port can be problematic, but you said it used to work OK, right?
EDIT: Actually, checking back, you never said that. I used to have big problems with an Acer laptop with USB 1.1 and an external DVD Burner that I had attached. That was until some kind soul (5566) sold me his external case, which also had a Firewire connector. I guarantee your laptop will have that connector, and it’s about the same speed as USB 2.0.

I did use it once, a few months back with the same external burner, worked fine then. I also used to make backups on an external CD writer which never gave me a problem.
i suppose you burned those cds or dvds at low speed. you certainly didnt notice any issue. maybe this time around you used a different brand or speed and it doesnt work. imho, usb1 simply doesnt cut for dvd burning. cds are ok because required data transfer speed is lower (cd x2 doesnt correspond to dvd x2!).
firewire is indeed a nice solution for old comps with no usb2.
Now you clever bunnies probably knew this for eons, but I never could fathom an answer to how the hell you get your crap from downloads onto the big screen, until that is a mate yesterday flicked me a simple flash drive USB thing and said, load me up with that fillum you were talking about.
Now my new Philips home theatre thingee has a USB socket thingee and in a couple of minutes, I’d loaded up a couple of those flashmajigs and was settled back watching movies from the pute. Freakin’ amazing. No more poxing with burning crap that don’t want to be burned. Death to DVD. hell yeah!
I gave up Nero complete, use only ImgBurn and if necessary Slysoft program.
Nero messes up complete the OS. No matter which version.
If you really need Nero, just install Newro Micro or lite, which has all the crap removed from Nero, which is not necessary.
For the Burning problem: Ever tried different DVD-R or CD-R?
Even pay more, but i had only problems with NoName DVD-R or cheap brands like “Melody”.
Verbatim, Sony are IMHO the most reliable ones.
