I’m afraid the ship has sailed for me. The opportunity to reenlist was before I got my discharge papers.
I’m asking this for others, if others have considered reenlisting during their mandatory service. Most Taiwanese can’t wait to get out of the military.
He’s in the Marines (海軍陸戰隊). I have no idea if he could choose this or if it was chosen for him. I get the impression he made the choice, as he seems to be choosing the most strenuous paths (like how he now has applied for the special forces).
These things constantly change.
When my son did his conscription last year they were hit up by recruiters very often…even in boot camp. I remember on visitors day they had recruiters from several branches trying to get conscripts to enlist. If you did enlist and even in another branch you just finished basic where you were and then switched over.
He said there was even a recruiting week in basic. You had to choose a branch recruiter and have a sit down with them.
In his case he just told them he’s a dual citizen and they told him to move on.
After basic they still have periodic recruitment drives…and there are various options.
I haven’t seen any recruitment drives when I was there, but our service was nearly 2 years back then and I had JUST made the cutoff to have a shorter “release date”.
But I did hear sometimes they try to get conscripts within their unit to reenlist. I had one sergeant who did this and was promoted to staff sergeant immediately after that.
