Wallace was sentenced to 90 days in jail with a two-year probation in 2001 after he was convicted of sexual delinquency of a minor in Oregon, information from the AIT showed.
The agency launched a search for Levi Forrest Wallace, 43, after it was informed by the American Institute of Taiwan (AIT) that he had entered Taiwan on Oct. 2 on a tourist visa.
Does the AIT alert TW authorities of registered sex offenders entering TW by default? I wonder if there’s been similar cases.
Wallace did not stay in a hotel in Taoyuan as stated on his card, the NIA said, adding that he was then placed on the agency’s closely watched list and would not be permitted to stay when found.
Has anyone actually been deported for not staying at the address they said they would be at?
I don’t know how I feel about this. From the charge and his age at the time it sounds like he was probably a 19 or 20 year old who was dating someone under 18. Not like a kiddie diddler. And now 20+ years after serving his small sentence he’s still getting railroaded over it, shamed all over the media, deported…? I’m not saying what he did was a good thing, but it’s probably not any worse than the foreigners who come here with a DUI.
Yeah, better inform INTERPOL about the notorious minor dating terrorist who was in county for a couple months back during the early days of the Bush Jr administration.
The English writers for Taiwanese media are such shameless bootlicks; surprised this wasn’t Keoni.
Someone posted about this case in the Kaohsiung expats group on FB and they put up his rap sheet. It was a misdemeanor. They don’t usually go that light unless it’s a case of this type. Plus, his age at the time and severity of the sentence leads me to believe that as well.
I have no idea about the 2010 charge, but this article is solely focused on the 2001 charge so I’m addressing that as the source of their ire.
I’m a believer in letting people have second chances if they’ve done their time. In any event, they could’ve deported him quietly without making him a media spectacle. Everything I’ve seen about this case seems focused on the 2001 misdemeanor so I wasn’t aware of the 2010 felony as it didn’t seem relevant enough to be reported on by any of the bastions of journalism here. Maybe the dude was having sex on the beach and a normal misdemeanor was elevated to a felony because of his past offense? Who knows? You’re equally speculating here.
If you want to just score a point, that’s fine. Thought you weren’t afraid of actual discourse.
We got email notifications from AIT. How do you keep that quiet?
Maybe it was relevant to the government officials. A sex offender doesn’t have to register when they come to Taiwan, right? Hmm-- seems a likely reason to come here then huh? Like you said, a fresh start.
Good riddance.
Score a point for what? I’m giving you facts and you’re giving me a lecture on second chances.
A fresh start over something that happened two decades ago? (14 years ago if you’re solely focused on that 2010 charge)
Seems a bit late to connect that with seeking a “fresh start.”
@tempogain and @Taiwan_Luthiers are right in that this is pure speculation. You’re going with the worst case scenario that doesn’t seem very plausible based on the charge, and I’m looking at it from a more logical perspective based on what I know about the law. Anyway, dude is gone. You should be satisfied his name will forever turn up in Google searches connected to his public shaming here.
Or why he was flagged by the AIT and why they thought it important to pass on the information.
I would speculate (only an opinion about why he was deported not about any offences), he was flagged for none disclosure on his visa application, when they checked up, he wasn’t staying at the place listed on his visa, or informed them of any move.
This would invalidate his visitors visa, thats an automatic deportation.
When tourists enter Taiwan (I assumed this guy entered on a tourist visa?) do they need to declare that they have or have not been convicted of a crime?
It’s possible he’s being booted out for entering Taiwan but lying on his entry form about this point. Pure speculation only here as I am not familiar with this guy’s situation at all.
