Reminiscing about Taiwan. Care to join?

Jon the monkey man, why did I call him that? It was mostly in jest.

I think he was in Taiwan only a few days when I ran into him at Santos cussing up a streak in taiwanese down in the basement at the PacMan machine.

He was from a well to do family in the east coast and he was on some sort of sabbatical because his grandfather gave him a wad of cash and told him to go explore the world so he busted out of college and bought a ticket to Asia, landed in Korea for a few days and then Taiwan. I asked him why Asia, he said that he threw a dart at the world map and it hit Asia.

He said upon landing in taipei he found a hostel and went pub hopping. Went into one pub and a girl waited on him (he later married her..be careful going into pubs you may end up married).

Jon became one of my best friends ever. He ran into a malaysian dude looking for recruits for his “boutique runs”. Back in the day Taiwan and Korea , especially Korea restricted a lot of luxury goods with high tariffs. Ostensibly to conserve foreign currency. Thus were born the boutique stores where fancy goods can be had for less. These were usually “brought in (smuggled)” past customs and thus were cheaper. Korea was especially tough as they really restricted foreign luxury good. Anyway Jon went on a few of these adventures, said it was fun and i decided to tag along..What can happen with a little smuggling right?

HK was the first stop to load up on goods. Our little team consisted of Jon and me and Larry (some american guy we picked up on the streets in taipei) were going to meet up in HK on separate flights. Landed in HK and finally got to “Paris Villa”. Which turned out to be in an infamous high rise in downtown HK with many small hostels and what not. A real quagmire of dwellings housing all sorts of businesses , some of ill repute no doubt. Very shady sort of place. Made me ashamed to say “Paris Villa” on the arrival card as my destination. Went in , found the place and located Jon and larry. We were going to stay in HK for a week. The monkey leader gave us all 30usd/day for our excusions while he went on a shopping spree and played mahjong all day. He did take us all out to a Malaysian restaurant with his wife on one occasion. So the gang of three set out to explore HK and we even went to the sleepy enclave of Macau on a Boeing Jetfoil the Sao Jorge, which may still be plying the waters between HK and Macau? Macau was very sleepy. There was the Lisboa, one of only two casinos in all of Asia. In Korea we would be visiting the other one in Seoul. Very interesting place, we spent the day in Macau and got back to HK late at night on another Boeing jetfoil.

The few days in HK went by fast, it was a lot of fun. Then we came in to Taipei where customs was a breeze we kept half of the stuff in the storage area pre Customs and the rest we just walked through customs and that was it.

The next day we got on a Korean Airbus A300 to Soeul. Our leader walked around the plane and said half of the passengers were fellow monkeys (thats what they called themselves the people doing these boutique smuggling runs). Apparently it was no big deal bringing in these items, you were not going to jail or anything just the items would be impounded or confiscated. Just dont bring in Gold or Diamonds , those may get you in jail. So i checked my luggage carefully hoping there were no compartments containing anything like this.

to be continued (if y’all want me to continue that is …anyone interested in this little semi illegal smuggling run?)

Hong Kong was a blast to someone early 20s who had never been there before. Having a week to hang out there and wandering all over the place (because its HK and who wants to stay in a dingy hotel room anyway right). It was an experience one that was pretty special even though I ended up going to HK another 100 times and even staying in five star hotels later, that first time was memorable.

On to Seoul ! I thought Seoul would be just another breeze through customs, but I got a bit worried when the tour leader said i need to go to the plane toilet before landing and strap on several packs of Rodenstock sunglasses. Four packs in all, each 12 I think. Plus we had to wear a Rolex watch a bit higher then normal on our wrist so it wouldn’t be seen but if “caught” it wouldn’t be as if we were trying to hide it. In our bags we also had a lot of fancy golf shirts, Lacoste and some other luxury clothing items. All in all including the Rolex probably each one of us were carrying over who knows 20k USD in luxury goods? The bossman said if we are “discovered” not to point anyone else out, because no point all of us at the police station. Right ! That gave me some confidence…not.

The plane did a missed approach at Kimpo and since i was keen on airplanes reminded my bud Jon to not sweat it its no big deal.

We landed and it was kind hard to walk with all these sunglasses stuck to me !! And a pack was starting to come loose on my leg and i was having to walk carefully so it didn’t pop out.

I was getting a wee bit concerned. We split up and entered separate customs gates. Lucky no issues and we were out in due course, the man hardly blinked an eye.

What a sigh of relief as we got into the cab to our hotel. This time a much better hotel in an outskirt of Seoul, not far from downtown. WE were taken to a nice bulgogi dinner that night by the bossman. He then gave us another 30usd/day to hold us for the next seven days. And there we were set loose on the city of Seoul. Jon had been there so he knew where to go. Downtown Seoul meant the Lotte Hotel,a large five star hotel by the Lotte group , makers of candies and chocolates. Seoul at that time seemed very large but was not as advanced as Taipei. Felt like a large Taichung in feel. Kinda a wee bit countrybumpkin compared to TAipei. At that time. Today its a different story.

WE basically spent the day in downtown Seoul wandering around. On the way back, we ran into three factory girls sitting around their dorm close to our hotel. They were a few years younger , probably late teen maybe just turned 20. They didn’t speak a word of english but somehow Jon and I were able to pantomime that we were at the hotel close by and if they wanted to come over and have coffee. Turned down..NO.

That night we (only JOn and I) went to the Casino, the other Casino in all of asia. NO Koreans were allowed in, you had to show your passport. IT was quite large and on some hill in some big hotel complex, forget which one. Taxi took us there. Jon was excited as he always seemed to have good fortune there. The last time he won over 3000 USD at blackjack ! I didnt even know how to play. But we sat down at the cheap table (dollar minimum bet) and Jon taught me how to “read” the cards . Single deck shoe. Free drinks flowed and we were having fun. It was getting past midnight and that is when Jon said the Casino crew let things slide at times when you lose. And they did , quite a few times my bet was clearly a lost one but the croupier let me ride (tip coming of course). What was interesting…besides overall i was winning because of Jon’s direction. And then this very cute girl came and sat next to me at the gambling table. I asked her if she was from Taiwan as she looked Taiwanese to me. WE chatted for a bit not too long and she left. The waiter came by and said there was a person who wanted to speak to me.. I thought oh this is odd. He pointed out a woman sitting on a sofa nearby wanted to speak to me. I went over. She said she was from taiwan and she has two daughters/ One of whom she noticed i had been sitting next to at the table.. One married and the other i was sitting next to was not married and was kinda of naughty and she only liked foreign men. And she did not approve , she wanted her daughter to marry a taiwanese. So she thought since I am half TAiwanese that would be acceptable to her, all we had to do was get her daughter to go with the plan. She gave me her name card and said for sure to call on her when back in Taiwan. She was in taichung. But before long the daughter came downstairs looking for her mom , took one look at me and knew what her mom was up to. She quickly ushered her mom out of there and gave me a dirty look. I must admit she was very cute! And i maybe should have visited them in taichung when i got back? Her mom promised me a house and a Mercedes Benz if I married her daugther..lol Looking back if I could do it all again, i would have visited her mom back in taichung and who knows what would’ve happened?

Went back to the hotel with a couple hundred dollars ahead and Jon was close to 1K for the night. Big win!

Next day we went back to the Lotte and with the ring leader and his wife who took us to a nice lunch. He was enjoying his Seoul time as he had sold off all the stuff we brought and made a tidy profit.

ON the way back to the hotel we ran into the girls again. This time the leader who can speak Korean told the girls about us and said they should join us for dinner at the hotel. The factory girls decided they were game and came over. Larry excused himself , he didnt want to spend any money. Found out he had been weaselling all the funds the bossman gave us individually and spent zero dollars, he bought a loaf of bread and that was all he had eaten for the last couple of days. We told the boss and he was thereafter grounded, he was forced to stay with the boss all day so he can get fed . Which was really nice of the bossman. Larry just went whereever the boss and his wife went for the next few days.

Meantime Jon and i were stuck with the three girls. AFter dinner they went back to their dorm (there was a curfew in Seoul at that time). Next day we took them to Lotte as they were off that day. Ended up spending the whole day with them , saw a movie and all that. All good innocent fun and the girls were happy they didnt have to spend any money. And we had fun pantomiming and drawing pictures with our arms to communicate.. Good fun. Could have been more fun but wasn’t sadly.

And thats part one of the Korean story. part two follows.

When you are young its easy to be pleased. Simple things bring pleasure. After Seoul it was an hour jet hop to TOkyo to load up again on luxury goods. This time only a single night layover at the bossmans friends house in Yokohama. We were set loose on the town Jon and I. He wanted to find a watering hole and said last times he was there he didnt find any. I figured Taipei was probably somewhat patterned after a Japanese city in some ways. So i said follow me. We took off from the city center and I followed my nose and low and behold came upon a pub. Turned out to be an excellent choice. The bossman spoke english and was a 50 year old dude (we were early 20s) and he was a lot of fun to yak with. Next day back to Korea.

Landed at Kimpo and loaded up with goodies again. I really did NOT like the 4 packs of Rodenstock sunglasses strapped to my body. Felt like a drug mule in Midnight Express !

But we have a problem, VERY tight security at Kimpo because apparently the US Vice President was about to arrive shortly. Dang why don’t those VVIP people have their own Open the Door and let me out space so they can go straight from plane to Honor Guard reception to hotel?? Why why? Maybe cuz the underlings had to go through the terminal and hence the tight security. IN case the northern commies had some evil plans.

Well I didn’t feel good. And sure enough an undercover cop came over and felt my back and felt the package . Now at this stage any package strapped to a person could be a bomb. SO ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE, I was told to put my hands up and the package was pulled off me (probably not a smart move if it actually WAS a bomb). So of course soon as they saw the Rodenstock glasses , it was all cool again and the small army of undercover agents surrounding me dispersed. I was told to put everything on the counter. And then told to put everything in Custom Hold. So no worries. Not real danger, just bring the goods to customs hold. They didnt even confiscate anything. Lucky for my boss the Rolex on my wrist was not seen so I was able to keep that and ONE pair of Rodenstock glasses a couple of Lacoste shirts and some other bits and pieces wiht the bulk held at customs for retreival on departure. All in all very civilized and i need not have worried at all.

A few more days in Korea, back to Walker Hill again and then back to Taiwan bringing all the things held at customs into taiwan with no complaints from the customs.

Then the mission was not yet completed. WE had to make one more run to HK. Which we did uneventfully. A few more days wandering around HK and Macau again and no problems wiht TW customs on way back

mission accomplished. Jon had never been caught but i was, second time into kImpo.

We were paid 300 usd at the end of the run. All in all it worked out well. A free trip with some money to compensate for our time and lodging taken care of, flights and meals too.

Didnt want to do it again though but Jonnie boy went on a few more. I was always jealous when he came back with more winnings from Walker Hill. That dude was GOOD at blackjack. He said the magic is in the single deck. so he can somewhat card count. Don’t play at triple deck tables he said. Hold at 17 he said, but not before. Apparently casinos had to “draw to 16” then so there’s a good chance they can go bust while you held 17 even if they didn’t the odds are in your favor.

Back to Santos. Some interesting people came around there for sure. One day a woman came in and said hi to the owner. He bowed deeply and spoke to this woman in japanese. The lady was taiwanese but apparently was married to one of the “top tax payers in Japan”.

Santos was close to the Ritz hotel. And another person of note was this old guy (older than the owner) who stopped in briefly , said hi to the owner and left. The owner said to me, do you know who that guy is? I said no. Well he is the one that owned a lot of the land around there and sold the land for the Ritz. He was quite wealthy but apparently doesnt own a car, lived nearby and always took the public bus ! He apparently one day had been waiting in the rain for the bus standing under his umbrella but wouldn’t even consider taking a taxi. Frugal was his middle name. Mine is apparently “cheap bastard” tho but even i take a cab and i dont have anywhere in the same universe as that guy money wise.

Before 1997, or at most before 2020.

IIRC correctly i was last there in 97

It’s a trait I love in some Taiwanese. That old-school frugality.
