We have a family at our Family Forum looking for information on rentals in Taizhong. I thought she’d get a much more helpful response here at Forumosa but she had trouble registering so I thought I’d help out by getting the topic started.
What kind of rent can they expect for a nice, clean, comfortable 3 or 4 bedroom apartment for a family with 2 children? The employer is paying an allowance (not sure what the amount is) but if you could give a general idea of what to expect I’m sure they’d appreciate it.
Any good websites for Taichung or names of real estate agents, etc.?
Many thanks!
When I was looking for a place there, I was shocked by the way the apartments were left. It seems that the owners do not clean up at all after a tenant moves out and the new tenants are suppose to see the “beauty” of the place through all the shit that is left behind.
I spoke with an American woman leaving there and she told me that this is standard operating procedure in Taizhong. I think you can probably find a 3 bedroom for around 7-10,000 but again you have to be willing to clean up the place first.
There’s a five bdr in our beautiful neighborhood out in Tanzi right on the Tai/chung city border that rents for 12K. We rent across the street, and another Big Nose couple with a 2 yr old rents behind us. You can see some pics of the neighborhood at

We love this neighborhood, lots of green space, the neighbors are mostly cool, and it is far from the madding crowd. That last is the downside; it’s 25 minutes from the train station.

Taichung is way cheaper than Taipei and with the number of empty apartments around the rental rates are pretty good. It shouldn’t be difficult to find something nice. Security guys at apartment buildings are the best bet in finding something quickly. Agents suck and should be avoided where possible.
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I’ll pass this info on to them.
Vorkosigan, thanks for that link. That neighborhood you wrote about looks interesting (for me, actually) but what I want to know is… are there snakes???

Yes, of course. The Kiwis behind us go ape when they see or hear about one. But it’s not like they knock on the door or sidle into your bed. I wouldn’t worry about’em.

Tachia’s new housing is worth a look. Western style, well close anyhow, and right by the new freeway. 20 minutes to Taichung.
Grief, I have been here too long

Hey, why don’t you slither on up here this weekend? You can scale our little hill, taste the local air, shed your downtown hassles…we’ll have a barbecue in your honor. Contact me by email at turtonm@yahoo.com and I’ll give you directions. I am always trying to get more foreigners up here.
