Resident visa or visit visa[desperate help]

Hello everyone iam new in this forum and desperately in need for advice.
Iam a Nigerian who got married to a Taiwanese in Hongkong though presently iam residing in China. I have a 5 year old son and the second is coming soon. When i got married in 2005 ,i applied for a resident visa in hongkong but i was refused for whatever reasons, then i made up my mind to stop whining about Taiwan refusal because i felt really bad ,my wife too .
I decided to focus in china with my family ,now five years is past and i would like my son to go to school in Taiwan and would like to move to Taiwan now. Now i will soon head back to home to apply for visa but iam confused ,my questions are

  1. Which visa should i apply? visit visa or resident visa ?
  2. Also if i apply visit visa can it be changed to resident visa and or joining family resident visa[JFRV]?
3.Incase if i apply resident which should i apply multiple or single entries?
  3. The resident and the JFRV are they the same thing?

I want to move to Taiwan to live with my family also be able to come to china to take care of my business and other runs any time i want.
But i want to settle permanently in Taiwan.
please i am begging for a straight forward answer and other valuable information would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I think you’ll want to come in on a visitor visa and then apply for a Joint Family Resident Visa.

However, you will need a notarized criminal record check from Nigeria. I can’t help you on that one, but my guess is it won’t be easy to get.

I’m also not sure what effect being Nigerian will have. We need one of the resident visa experts to comment on this (SatTV?).

Thanks for your info… Yes you are right being a Nigerian is another problem of its own. But anyways for the criminal report it’s easy to get in Abuja, which i will certify in the Taipei office there. For some years now it’s been hard for us that was why i decided to forget about Taiwan. Recently there have been a sort of relaxation on the restriction of visa issuance to us.
I spoke with them and they said that every case is treated individually and as long as my marriage is not bogus one, then i won’t have much problem. It’s only going to take some time for approval.
Plz more help, information…thx

I think that’s about it really, nikes. When I got my JFRV I needed the criminal record check, marriage certificate (translated into Mandarin), and my Chinese name certified by the Taiwanese representative office in London. I can’t think of anything else. I do know that I didn’t need a letter of impediment because I got married in the UK. If you get married in Taiwan you do need this. Not sure whether you need it if you get married in Hong Kong.

Get your wife to give them a call and find out if anything else is needed. Also, run a couple of searches on this site, I’m sure someone has put up a definitive list in the past.
